Fascinating article in the NYT Sunday magazine about the queen of Israel’s culture wars and the defense of Mizrachi culture and society which has been sidelined and belittled since the founding of the State and definitely needs to be honored and empowered as part of a complicated civil rights struggle within Israel. But in the hands of Miri Regev and her Likudnick and more fascistic friends, this is all framed as a rightwing attack on Ashkenazim and leftwingers in general, with tolerance and multiculturalism trashed in the mix and a more fervent state sponsored McCarthyism gaining dominance. A real tribute to the power of culture, art, music, film, theater....

When every Jewish person you meet is a (hostile) Israeli soldier, wouldn't you call them "Yahud?" Gazan children are not anti-Semites, they hate the soldiers and armies and warplanes that have destroyed their lives 3 times in 6 years and the continued incursions, crippling siege, and the ongoing humiliation and destruction of their parents an their futures.... Twenty people gathered yesterday evening on a warm night to schmooze, network, sip wine and seltzer, munch popcorn drizzled with Palestinian olive oil, freshly sizzled s’mores, and Pam Roger’s infamous brownies. The fundraiser for the Health and Human Rights Project of AJJP and JVP was the first of a four part summer Palestinian film series under the stars. We had a lively discussion after watching Voices Across the Divide. Come to the next three films.
