Yesterday I imagined future objects as relics of our present (with a card game).

At the MIT Museum-hosted Speculative Climate Futures workshop:
- I worked with some familiar faces (high schoolers and MIT staff); ideating wise, playful, and joyful futures.
- Anaya Raikar and Susy Jones also shared how powerful playful action can be at escaping fact-induced doomerism
- Stuart Candy shared playful strategies for speculative futures into reality.
- Prepared to live newscast for a 2075 climate Carnival festival

If you want to stand out, be salmon in a pond 🐟, not tuna in the open ocean 🐠

Last week I learned how indies might stand out by developing for emerging platforms (from Petricore CEO, Ryan Canuel )

Most indie devs build in highly competitive markets (PC + console) because
- it’s “easier to build”
- there’s a larger audience
- our friends are doing it

However,

This results in low visibility 🌫️and scattered production 😵‍💫

Be ready to catch a wave (rather than chasing it) by
- building a tight circle of ecosystem elders 👣
- nimbly experimenting down short paths 🧭
- listening to weather changes (stagnant water, incoming hurricane) 🌀

You might just grow into a whale: uncommonly large and always a pleasure to spot 🐋

Your most important projects — no one asked you to create 🌅

Last weekend I discovered artists and curators from around the world who recognize the beauty and power of Indigenous art.

(At Ancestral Futures: Indigenous Cardinal Relations at the - organized by Brenda L Croft and others.)

I learned:
- When you create art, you nurture unspoken truths into reality.
↳ No one asked for the MCU but people experimented and here we are.

- There are social contracts you and I are expected to agree to (working a 5/2 day work week).
↳ However, under settler colonialism, these contracts serve a monolithic worldview (excluding any who operate on alternate schedules).

- To be a global citizen, you must recognize knowledge beyond physical objects (learn about stories, practices, philosophies).
↳ When you have a pluralistic worldview, life is a never ending fountain of learning experiences.

Also got to try an assortment of Australian treats 🤭.

was a success! Here are 4 of my takeaways from this weekend:

1. Common knowledge is not common 📖.
- Personal insights = great opportunity to share knowledge on topic overlaps.

2. T-shaped candidates are great collaborators 🕸️.
- Specialized focus is ideal if looking to land your first paid role in games.
- Being aware of adjacent specialties makes you a smoother communicator.

3. Companies value your work only when there’s value assigned to it 🔢.
- Talk using metrics that translate to numbers.

4. At work, 3 factors determine the strength of your role 💸.
- pay rate
- learning opportunities
- relational opportunities
Yet pay is least important for long term professional growth.
