We haven’t had much heat or humidity extremes across Iowa to start July, however that pattern looks to change later this week. Heat currently over western sections of the county is expected to build eastward into the Midwest. Above normal temperatures are likely across much of the United State for the weekend and early next week. Highs should be in the upper 80s to mid 90s for the coming weekend in central Iowa. Peak afternoon heat indices may reach well into the 90s, and possibly 100 or more in spots central and south. Those planning or participating in outdoor activities should be prepared for a return to summer heat and humidity this weekend.

Some spotty chances for showers and storms will linger in the forecast into tomorrow. It should be partly sunny today with a slight chance of afternoon showers & storms north. Those should end into the evening and overnight however with mostly clear skies northwest but clouds still in place southeast. Tuesday should be similar to today with variable cloudiness, and a slight chance of afternoon showers and storms north. Severe weather isn’t anticipated either day. Highs should be in the upper 70s to mid 80s through tomorrow, with lows in the upper 50s to mid 60s. The outlook later in the week calls for more widespread chances for showers and storms Wednesday, but turning drier with increasing heat and humidity to end the week. Heat indices should be well into the 90s by the coming weekend.
