The Gulf’s heritage is richer and deeper than many know, and oral storytelling illuminates our varied past. Houston Cypress of the Miccosukee Tribe’s Otter Clan tells of traditional plant medicines and sweeping Everglades landscapes in his spoken word poetry. The Gulf’s heritage is richer and deeper than many know, and oral #storytelling illuminates our varied past. Martha Bireda, a doctor of counseling education and retired speech pathologist in Punta Gorda, wrote a memoir, "Reflections of a Colored Girl," sharing her experiences growing up in the Jim Crow era.

Florida cowboys, the living legacies of the longest history of ranching in America, tell tales of the same frontier but with swirls of cattle fanning the land alongside acres of palmetto brush. A century ago, no fence laws existed, and cows roamed the beaches. The first cattle to set foot in this country arrived 500 years ago, adapting quickly to the sun and swamp.
One of a dwindling group of Florida cowboys, cattleman Joe Johnson honors his and his forefathers’ traditions in words and pictures. His home is a museum full of his own folk art and collections of inherited memorabilia, rich with memories and tales. Listen to his story and others here: https://bit.ly/4cPxCJv
Centuries of heritage live on in the descendants of Southwest Florida’s pioneers, four of whom we meet here. #Storytelling isn’t a craft learned or practiced; it’s a life lived and shared.
One of those storytellers is Richard Lolly who shares vivid accounts of Pine Island’s fishing heritage. "It’s a way of living that’s fading at the edges," He says. "Stories carry it forward.” Visit our website to uncover SWFL history through these local voices: https://bit.ly/4cPxCJv
