AI Claims to Read Faces
Stanford psychologist Michal Kosinski has
developed artificial intelligence that purportedly
determines intelligence, sexual preferences, and
political beliefs by analyzing facial features. While his research aims to spotlight the potential dangers of such technology, it raises significant ethical
concerns.
In a 2021 study, Kosinski demonstrated that facial
recognition could predict political beliefs with 72%
accuracy, surpassing human accuracy yet still far
from perfect.
His 2017 research, which predicted
sexual orientation with 91% accuracy, faced criticism for potentially enabling discrimination.
Despite Kosinski's intentions to warn policymakers, the technology poses risks of misuse and privacy
violations, reminiscent of past abuses of facial
recognition technology.
