The Museum of Discovery and Science recently hosted the 13th Annual Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Celebration on May 18th. The event aimed to celebrate and honor the diverse cultures of the Asian-Pacific American community. Led by Museum President and CEO Joe Cox and the dedicated efforts of Linda Tran and the museum team, the celebration featured a variety of cultural performances and activities that attracted over 2,000 attendees.

The event began with a warm welcome from the Polynesian Proud Aloha Greeters and traditional Polynesian island music. Braddah Derek presented live Hawaiian music and engaging hula lessons. The Kuchipudi Dance Group showcased their intricate classical Indian dance, and the Butterfly Release added a touch of natural beauty to the event.

Other highlights included performances by the LaniSina Polynesian Dance Academy and Omilani Alarcon, showcasing the vibrant cultures of the Pacific Islands. The Balintawak Sola Filipino Martial Arts School demonstrated the discipline of Filipino martial arts, while the Champa Chameli Dance Group showcased South Asian dance traditions. Drums of Tahiti, led by Buki, offered powerful rhythms, and performances such as "From Tahiti with Love" and "Aloha from Hawaii" brought authentic Hawaiian and Tahitian experiences to the stage.

The event also included opportunities for visitors to learn the hula, courtesy of Polynesian Proud, and a powerful finale with the Samoan Fireknife Dance, leaving the audience in awe. Throughout the event, the South Florida Filipino American Chamber of Commerce (SFFACC) was notably present, with President Darren Mendoza and Board Director Mellany Killian highlighting the importance of community support and representation.

Fort Lauderdale's Mayor Dean Trantalis made the occasion even more significant with a proclamation celebrating the diverse cultures and rich history of the Asian-Pacific American community. General Kazuhiro Nakai accepted the plaque, symbolizing appreciation and recognition.
