Taxes will rise in Wissahickon School District
The Wissahickon School Board was recently presented with a final budget of $99.6 million for consideration. The budget increases taxes 3.46 percent for a tax rate of 19.44 mills. The increase means an additional $134 annually for a home assessed at the district’s median value of $206,000. According to school officials, 19.44 mills is among the lowest millage rates of the 21 school districts in Montgomery County, and mandated pension and health care costs are among the most significant causes for the increase. At the start of the budget process, the Japanese language program, the school resource officer and full-time librarians in all school buildings were being considered for elimination. Each of those programs has been preserved in the 2017-18 budget.

Montgomery County homeowner taxes will increase $66 on average
County commissioners approve 11 percent tax increase
After a contentious, almost three-hour meeting, Montgomery County commissioners voted 2-1 to pass the 2017 budget with an 11 percent tax increase. The budget will dedicate a portion of its millage to funding Montgomery County Community College at a rate of about $22.3 million for 2017, more than $4 million above prior funding levels. The tax increase will add $66 to the tax bill of a home assessed at the county average of $300,000. Montgomery County will still have the lowest tax rate of any county in the Philadelphia region.

Real estate taxes may go up in Montgomery County a whopping 11%
"Under a proposed $409.5 million 2017 budget, Montgomery County real estate taxes would increase 11 percent, the result of a new tax category created to fund Montgomery County Community College. The increase would add about $66 to the tax bill of a home assessed at the county average $300,000. Even with the proposed increase, Montgomery County’s tax rate would remain the lowest among Philadelphia’s neighboring counties on both sides of the Delaware River. According to Commissioner Valerie Arkoosh, the county has not been paying its fair share in recent years to the college, which is set up to receive equal funding from tuition, the county, and the state. If approved, the county’s millage rate would increase from 3.459 to 3.85 mills. The county is to hold hearings on the budget on Dec. 1, with commissioners scheduled to vote on a final draft on Dec. 15. Visit http://www.montcopa.org/93/Finance to view the proposed budget. At the same meeting, the commissioners unanimously elected Dr. Valerie Arkoosh to serve as the first woman chair of the board of commissioners, succeeding state Attorney General-elect Josh Shapiro. Shapiro stepped down as chairman; however he will remain on the board until January. His successor will be appointed by county judges."
