41 YEARS AGO TODAY! June 21, 1983, will never be forgotten. At 10:15 p.m. McClure #1 Mine in the rural Appalachian Mountains became a ball of fire roaring straight to Miles W. Sutherland, co-host Marsha Self ‘s dad. He had just enough time to cover his eyes. He had third degree burns over 67 percent of his body. Seven of his coworkers were not so fortunate as all the families were getting that dreadful call in the middle of the night. Coal Mining would never be the same. The survivors and families should never be forgotten.
Join Becky Riner White and Marsha as they take you from the beginning to the end of that disastrous summer. Summer of 1983 is outlined in our upcoming book "Our Blood Runs Black," a quote from Marsha’s dad as his sweat glands and blood were seeping out of his body and dripping black onto the hospital floor in the ER. He looked at me and said, "See, Angel, even Our Blood Runs Black.'"
Becky and Marsha will be at the July 4 celebration in Clintwood Va which will take place on July 6 starting at 11:00. We will be located in the Historical Society Building. Please come and see us! At a podcast
