“There’s not one simple area that it affects. It’s everyone,” Sen. Sally Turner, R-Beason, said. “If you don’t know someone that’s been tainted with fentanyl, you will.”

Illinois Republican senators have filed bills that would combat the state’s fentanyl crisis and further punish major possessors of the drug.

The crash remains under investigation.

Fatal Traffic Crash

Bloomington, IL - On Saturday, 3/08/25, at approximately 8:02 a.m., Bloomington police officers were dispatched to the intersection of Wylie Drive and West Market Street, for a traffic crash involving two sedans. The Bloomington Fire Department was also dispatched to the scene.

Paramedics with the Bloomington Fire Department provided medical attention to one of the drivers. The driver, a forty-nine-year-old male, was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

The driver of the other vehicle was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Due to the crash resulting in a fatality, the McLean County Coroner's Office and the McLean County Accident Reconstruction Team were requested to assist with the investigation.

McLean County Coroner Dr. Kathleen Yoder is releasing the following information regarding the crash.

Pronounced deceased at Carle BroMenn Medical Center at 8:46 a.m., on March 8, 2025, was Scott W. Smith, age 49, of Bloomington, Illinois. Preliminary autopsy opinion indicates that Mr. Smith died from multiple blunt injuries due to an automobile collision, sustained as the driver of one of the cars. Toxicology testing is pending.

"The loss of life in our community is occurring frequently, and motor vehicle crashes are preventable when the best driving habits are practiced. The men and women of our agency are saddened to learn a motorist lost their life in this traffic crash," stated Chief Jamal Simington. "We will continue addressing poor driving behavior through a higher level of traffic enforcement and educational efforts."

The circumstances behind this incident are still pending investigation by the McLean County Coroner's Office, the Bloomington Police Department, and the McLean County Accident Reconstruction Team. Anyone with information should contact the Bloomington Police Department at 309-820-8888.
