HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING IN OUR AREA…

A presentation about Snow – geared towards children, by the Iowa State University’s Outreach and Extension program is this Wednesday, 3pm at the Missouri Valley Public Library.

If you enjoy writing and are in any grade in Washington County, the Blair Optimist Club is encouraging you to submit essays on the topic “How Optimism has Paved My Road to Success”. Writing that essay would qualify you to win a 2500 dollar scholarship. Contact the Blair Optimist International Club for details.

The deadline to submit a grant application to the Washington County Community Foundation is this Wednesday – find out more online at washcocommfoundation.org

Fort Calhoun’s Post Prom organizers are having a Bowling fundraiser on Sunday, January 19th starting at 6:30 at Mockingbird Lanes Contact information for signing up can be found on the Blair Radio page.

Not getting enough sleep is hard on your body and can impact your safety and the safety of those around you. Blair’s Memorial Community Hospital is having a free lunch and learn on the importance of adequate sleep - January 21st from noon til 1 in the Howard Conference Room. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is needed – call 402-426-1464 to register

OBITUARIES FOR 01.10.25 BROUGHT TO YOU BY SCHMIDT MEMORIALS OF BLAIR

85 year old Ruth McBroom Persson of Blair died January 8th. She had been a stylist for Mar-Bee Salon in Blair. She is survived by her sons Daniel of Kearney, Michael of Lincoln and Mark of Blair and their families. Her Memorial Service is Thursday, January 16th, 10:30 am at First Lutheran of Blair. Graveside services will be at a later date at the Blair Cemetery.

62 year old Javier Angel of Blair passed away January 7th. He was a long time employee of El Vallarta in Blair. He is survived by his wife, Amelia Juarez-Cruz, children Irene Angel and Javier, Junior, his brother Ramon, sisters Amelia, Esperanza and Alicia and their families. A wake service is Monday, 7pm at Campbell Aman, the Mass of Christian Burial is 10am Tuesday at Saint Francis Borgia Catholic Church. Visitation will follow that mass and be held at Campbell Aman until 8pm

49 year old Mark Shumake of Blair passed away January 1st. He is survived by his father, Warren, brothers Clark and Daniel, grandmother Grace Shumake-Wolf and Uncle John Shumake and their families. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Robert Miller, passed away in 2018 and Monty Miller, aged 68 passed away December 22, 2024. A celebration of life for the two is Monday 10am, at Campbell Aman, followed by burial at the Blair Cemetery.

NEW PAPIO NRD MEMBERS SWORN IN

The Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District, in it’s board meeting last night, welcomed three newly elected members and three returning members. Those new members sworn in include former Blair City Administrator Rod Storm, senior leader of Omaha Public Power District Brian Adams, and Omaha area physician Anne Hubbard. BEWARE OF POTENTIAL SCAMS REGARDING CALIFORNIA WILDFIRE VICTIMS

The Harrison County, Iowa Emergency Management Agency is cautioning those who want to help people impacted by the wildfires in California – to make sure their donations are going to reputable organizations, citing a rise in scams associated with the wildfires.
Officials with the emergency management agency encourage sticking with groups such as the Salvation Army and the Red Cross. It is recommended that if you are contacted by an unknown relief organization to be extra cautious and do not give out personal information in a contact you did not initiate.

SHOOTING, ACCIDENTS ON WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF'S SUMMARY

An accident early this morning in the 19 thousand block of County Road 4 is on the Washington County Sheriff’s activity summary for this week. Two other accidents since midnight – one at County Roads 4 and P-2 and another at County Roads 15 and ten. No injuries were indicated.
Also on Sheriff Mike Robinson’s report, that officer involved shooting in Arlington on Monday, arrests this week also include a 25 year old woman for Driving under Revocation and warrants, her 29 year old boyfriend on a warrant as well after a traffic stop in Fort Calhoun. A warrant arrest of a 38 year old male in Herman, the arrest of a 30 year old for driving under suspension at Highway 133 and Cydney Lane, and the arrest of a 25 year old male on a probation issue.
Those are just a few of the matters on that report from the Washington County Sheriff’.

Fort Calhoun’s Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department has elected the department’s officers for 2025. Fire Chief is Dan Mallory, Assistant Fire Chief is Ben Ruthven, Assistan Chief Justin Thompson, Fire Captains Scott Allstadt and Jose Zapat. EMS chief Tim Freshman, EMS Captains Paul Sevener and Kirt Ringler. A person having difficulty breathing is on the Blair Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department’s activity summaries for January 5th through the 7th. A person with an injured foot, a non-responsive person, two injuries from falls, and a medical nature unknown call were responded to by the Blair crews.

ANNEXATION ON THE AGENDA FOR BLAIR CITY COUNCIL NEXT WEEK

The Blair City Council this upcoming Tuesday is expected to approve the final reading of the annexation of the properties around the Hollow Road By-Pass.
Approval of the flood break warranty agreement for the annual maintenance of the floodgate at the water treatment plant for three years is expected as well. A group hoping to provide free snow removal on a volunteer basis for Blair Residents who need help with clearing their sidewalks – the Blair Snow Angel Program, is also expected to request undesignated donated funds to purchase signs to identify those residents that need that help.
That meeting Tuesday Night starts at 7 in Blair City Council Chambers at 218 South 16th Street.
