Is your New Year’s resolution to read more books? Good. It should be.
According to a troubling end-of-year article from The Atlantic, if you read a book in 2025—just one—you now belong to an endangered species.
“Like honeybees and red wolves, the population of American readers, Lector americanus, has been declining for decades,” the article reported. Fewer than half of Americans read a single book in 2022, and only 38 percent cracked open a novel or short story. Even worse, daily reading for pleasure has been dropping by about 3 percent a year since 2003.
Things don’t improve when you look at younger readers. In 2023, only 14 percent of 13-year-olds read for fun almost every day—down from 27 percent a decade earlier. Many high school and college students now struggle to finish a book cover to cover.
Bleak stuff.
But if reading feels like a chore, here’s a radical thought: maybe you’re just reading the wrong things—or reading them the wrong way.

🚆 Rail Service Returns to Blackwell!!!

We are thrilled to share that after 703 days of closure and extensive safety and infrastructure work, the Blackwell Industrial Authority announces the reopening of rail service in Blackwell. The line, now operating as Land Rush Rail (a Farmrail subsidiary), has resumed operations following Federal Railroad Administration approval.

This milestone restores a critical transportation asset supporting local industries, jobs, and ongoing investment in the Blackwell Industrial Park—while strengthening regional economic ties in Oklahoma and Kansas.

⚠️ Public Safety Reminder: Trains will once again be operating through the area. Drivers and pedestrians should use extreme caution at all railroad crossings, obey all signals and signage, and follow directions from railroad personnel as work continues along the line. Please be watching for railroad workers who may flag stop at crossings as repairs continue.

More details, including information on a future grand opening, will be announced soon!
