We hiked 12 miles round trip with ropes and gear so we could drop this pit.
I got inside the cave and was genuinely excited. A 189 foot drop! A beautiful pit. One I really wanted to see.
And then I got a feeling I couldn’t ignore.
It wasn’t panic. It wasn’t the normal nerves I always have before a drop. I’m used to being scared. I believe it’s okay to do things scared. This felt different.
It was quiet. Subtle. A steady voice that said, don’t go.
Little things started stacking up in my mind. The bolt placement. The thin diameter rope. Nothing was blatantly wrong, but together it was enough to listen.

So I didn’t go.

I stood there and pictured hiking back out of the woods without having dropped the pit. No photos. No footage. No accomplishment to post, and I felt completely at peace.
That’s how I knew it was the right call.
Sometimes trusting your intuition doesn’t look dramatic or brave. Sometimes it looks like walking away, even when you’re fully capable of continuing, and that might be the most important skill of all.

Always say no when you have this gut feeling. My friend’s rigging was fine, but I had an eery feeling and I decided not to drop the pit.

If you use a critter to rappel, this could happen to you!

This is how we climb out of a giant pit!

You won’t believe what’s hiding in these holes in the woods!

This is what we have to do when we survey a cave.

We were hoping to help our friend Monk finally set eyes on a 140 foot pit he had been trying to access for a very long time. The cave has been closed for decades, so getting permission, even for a short window, felt like a win before we ever stepped underground.

When we reached the entrance, it was clear it was not going to be easy. A log jam packed with rocks and dirt blocked the way, clearly doing its job of keeping people out. We did not have any digging tools, but we gave it a shot anyway.

The main log was not going anywhere, but after moving rocks and clearing just enough space, we managed to make a path underneath and squeeze inside. Sometimes that is all it takes.

And then there it was. Standing at the top of a beautiful pit that had taken patience and persistence to reach made the effort completely worth it. Days like this are why I keep going underground. 📸: DanDane Garreau
