When someone challenges you, you have to see who can squeeze the smallest.

Before caving, there was hiking.
I learned to read topo maps like stories and followed contour lines to waterfalls tucked deep inside Bankhead National Forest. I wandered into quiet places and photographed some of the most beautiful corners of Alabama. I loved getting lost in the woods, camping under open sky, listening to the forest breathe.

I never stopped exploring.
I just started going down.

Underground is a different world entirely. A different discipline. A different kind of silence. You never stumble into another person down there. There is no trash. No stray mylar balloon that somehow found its way to the forest floor. Only darkness, limestone, water, and time that doesn’t seem to match that of the outside world. ļæ¼

Both worlds hold endless beauty and a deep, steady peace.
One beneath the sun. One far from it.

And I like knowing that on the way to the caves, I still pass through the woods.
That I still get that quiet walk among trees before trading daylight for headlamps.
Light above. Light below.

Just hanging out in one of Alabama’s most beautiful places on what basically feels like dental floss 😜

Rappelling is the easy part. It’s quick, smooth, and over before your nerves can catch up.
The real mental game starts on the way out.

Climbing is slow. Deliberate. And it gives your brain way too much time to whisper intrusive thoughts like what if the rope breaks? What if I bith ascenders slip at thr same time? What if I suddenly forget how legs work?

So you breathe. You trust your gear. You trust your training. You move one step at a time anyway.

I don’t let fear stop me.
It just pay attention and keep going.
