Hi everyone! As you all know, marathon is happening right now until tomorrow 1 PM. Right now, Jason Issac is doing the PJB Memorial on air from now until 8:30 PM. You can listen in on our website at www.whrw.fm

As a reminder, WHRW is celebrating the 22nd anniversary of the Paul J. Battaglia Marathon! This tradition was started to help fundraise money for the Paul J. Battaglia scholarship fund, which was created in honor of one of WHRW’s former General Managers (1998-2000). After graduating from Binghamton University’s School of Management in 2000, he got a job working for Marsh Risk Consulting in Tower 1 of the World Trade Center. Paul fell victim to the attacks of 9/11, and in his honor the scholarship fund was started, and so was WHRW’s annual PJB Marathon. Every year, we broadcast a full 24 hours of programming to celebrate Paul’s life and his contributions to the station.

If you or family/friends are interested in donating to the PJB Scholarship

Please make all checks payable to the Binghamton University Foundation, in the memo section of the check note “Paul J. Battaglia Memorial Scholarship acct 20489”.

Hi WHRW enthusiasts!

Today is the day! Marathon 2024 will be starting at 1 PM EST today and will be ending at 1 PM EST tomorrow on Saturday Mar 23.

Hello Radio Lovers and WHRW Alumni!

Marathon 2024 will be happening from March 22-23 from 1 PM to 1 PM!

What is Marathon?
Marathon is a longstanding WHRW Tradition, this year being its 22nd Anniversary. We hold this event in memory of Paul J Battaglia, who was a GM of WHRW from 1998-2000, who fell victim on 9/11. To honor him, we hold a 24-hour-long marathon where we mess around and play games, all while encouraging listeners to donate money to the scholarship fund that was created in his name.

In addition to playing games and holding skits on air, we also have lots of stuff going on throughout the rest of the station! There will be games and movies in the station lobby and in the conference room, people use CR-2 to make carts, and in general, it’s just a great opportunity to just hang out! It is a great time to meet people in WHRW and get to know us.

We will be posting more information regarding marathon, donations to WHRW, and the Paul J. Battaglia Scholarship fund!

hey all ! we're super stoked to announce that this weekend we'll be hosting The Vollmers! Based right here in Binghamton, The Vollmers are a husband/wife duo composed of Claire Byrne of Driftwood and Brian Vollmer (Old Time Music Party & Simmerin' Stew). They are full-time musicians (who also teach and lead workshops), and their performance is an endearing set of older Country and Bluegrass songs, Archaic Fiddle Tunes from Rural Appalachia along with Rootsy Originals. Their interpretation of timeless American music is compelling and revealing; the show, charming.

Tune in to their performance this Saturday at 11:45am at 90.5FM or on our website !!

Hey Radiohead’s !!!!!!! now that programming has been going smoothly for a few weeks we want to introduce some of the people who help keep this place grooving — that’s right, Know Your DJ is BACK !!!!! First off we’re starting with the lovely Lilly, otherwise known as DJ BeanS with a Z. She’s been a member for one year, and although she is not doing a show this semester, in the past her show was titled “Virgo Rising,” where she played what she likes to call “good music.” To Lilly, “good music” includes Crumb’s latest album “Jinx” and music by Noname, who she saw perform at Brooklyn Steel — I’m so jealous 😤. If Lilly’s not sinking into the green couch in the station lobby, you can probably find her cooking up yummy vegan eats at the Food Co-op, or playing sick beats in her percussion ensemble. Over quarantine, back in her hometown of Hampton Bays, NY, DJ BeanS with a Z learned how to make 24/7 lofi beats to study to 😳. I think we’re ALL wondering when the album’s dropping Lilly !!!

Good morning Radioheads! Today, Isaiah, our Jazz director discusses the origins and significance of avant-garde jazz. Created as a way to rebel against the European constraints placed on Black musicians, the avant-garde movement aided in maintaining the identity and cultural autonomy of Black music, as well as setting the stage for the future of music.

Hey all ! Today Theo, our Program Director, discusses Northern Soul, a music and dance movement that originated in England and lasted from the late 1960s to the 1970s. Inspired by the Motown records created in Chicago and Detroit, Northern Soul shone a spotlight on Black musicians and created the setting for a cultural phenomenon. Its music, fashion, and principles remain an inspiration for many people even today. If you’re interested in learning more, check out the article on our website !

Hey radioheads! Today Amber, our Rock Director, discusses the whitewashing of rock music. Black musicians have paved the way for rock music, however their names are all too often forgotten. We can thank countless Black artists for their contributions to rock music both in the past and today.

Today, Olivia, our Heritage Director discusses the origins of East Coast and West Coast hip-hop, as well as the differences between the two. Although there are many subgenres of hip-hop that exist today, these two helped to define hip-hop as a genre as well as popularize it in mainstream media. Without East Coast and West Coast hip-hop, rap as we know it today would not exist.
