A Grand Slam! for NAACP
and Loaves and Fishes
It was a good day for the Loaves and Fishes soup kitchen in Biloxi, when the Biloxi NAACP walked in and handed them a check for $645, thanks to a partnership between the NAACP and Overtime Sports. While Loaves and Fishes is noted for giving every day, it was unique to see them receive something for a change.
Led by President James Crowell and their Baseball Diversity Committee, the NAACP took part in Overtime Sports’ “Champions for Charities” program. The special events coordinating firm managed sales and promotions for the Conference USA Baseball Tournament, held at MGM Park last month. The NAACP served as a sponsor for one of the tournament’s first-round games and received $1 per ticket sold. The NAACP chose Loaves and Fishes as the recipient (both organizations are housed in the same building).
Conference USA enjoyed both record single-game and overall event crowds during the 8-team, double elimination tournament.
Overtime Sports President Tim Bennett oversaw the construction of MGM Park and helped bring in the minor league team Biloxi Shuckers (Double-A, under the Milwaukee Brewers organization).
“We want to thank Tim Bennett and Overtime Sports, along with his dedicated and professional staff for their commitment to the community and helping everybody do better,” said Gordon Jackson, Chair of the Baseball Diversity Committee. “With their invaluable contribution to the Biloxi Shuckers and the overall baseball community, the area is surely a better place for everyone.”
