In the book, a character mentions that he would collect a “Nerd”—a strange-looking creature. While Dr. Seuss likely invented the word as nonsense, it was soon adopted into slang.

Early Usage & Evolution
• 1950s: After If I Ran the Zoo was published, the word “nerd” started appearing in American slang, particularly among teenagers.
• 1951: A Newsweek article cited “nerd” as a term used in Detroit high schools to describe an uncool or bookish person.
• 1960s-1970s: The term became widely used to describe socially awkward, highly intellectual individuals, often associated with science, math, or technology.
• 1980s: Pop culture (like Revenge of the Nerds and Dungeons & Dragons culture) cemented the nerd stereotype as someone obsessed with academic or niche interests.

Possible Linguistic Origins

Some theories suggest “nerd” could have evolved from:
• “Nert” (1920s slang for a nut or weirdo).
• Knurd (“drunk” spelled backward), a term reportedly used at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to describe students who didn’t party.

In the 1960s, Pippi Longstocking was adapted into a TV series and a film.
TV series
The 1969 Swedish/West German TV series Pippi Longstocking ran for 13 episodes. The theme song, "Here Comes Pippi Longstocking", was written by Astrid Lindgren and composed by Jan Johansson. Inger Nilsson, who starred in the series, sang the song.
Film
Pippi Goes on Board was a 1969 Swedish/West German film based on the Pippi Longstocking books. The film was made up of re-edited footage from the TV series. It was released in Sweden in 1973 and in the US in 1975.
Original books
The Pippi Longstocking books were written by Astrid Lindgren. Lindgren told her daughter Karin stories about Pippi in 1941 when Karin was sick with pneumonia. Lindgren wrote the first manuscript three years later.
Lindgren's other children's book series include Emil of Lönneberga, Karlsson-on-the-Roof, and The Six Bullerby Children.
