Be aware

We have been notified of another phone scam. With this new tactic the scammer calls and identifies himself as a Barrow County Judge. The scammer states the victim has a warrant and the warrant will be dismissed in exchange for a sum of money paid via electronic means.

Please help us educate our citizens who do not have social media and are at risk of falling victim to these predators. The scammers are preying on our citizens, and we need everyone to help. The scammers are most likely from overseas and use devices that cannot be traced.

Feel free to share this post so we can reach more citizens. Also, please tell your elderly friends and family about these recent phone scams.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office has made an arrest following the investigation into a school related threat at East Jackson Middle School. The juvenile suspect has been taken into custody and charged with one felony count of Terroristic Threats and Acts. The Sheriff's Office and the Jackson County School System have been in close communication with each other throughout the case. Although the investigation is ongoing, it appears to be isolated to the one individual. The suspect's parents have been cooperative with law enforcement. "We are very thankful for our school resource officers and investigators. Their swift and diligent work helped bring about a safe and successful resolution to the matter. I also want to thank school Superintendent Dr. Phillip Brown and his staff for their assistance. We take these types of threats seriously and will act accordingly."

UPDATE: Barrow County offices closed all day Wednesday

Due to the continued impact of winter weather, Barrow County offices will be closed for the entire day Wednesday, Jan. 22.

Citizens are advised to remain off the roads, as conditions remain hazardous, especially on hilly roads and side streets.

“I’d like to ask Barrow County to join me in thanking our selfless public safety and public works personnel, including Roads and Bridges, Sheriff’s Office, Fire Department, and E-911 employees, who worked tirelessly through the night to keep the citizens of Barrow County safe,” said Srikanth Yamala, Barrow County Manager.

Further updates will be provided if schedule changes are needed on Thursday, Jan. 23.

BARROW COUNTY OFFICES TO OPERATE ON DELAYED SCHEDULE WEDNESDAY

Due to the continued impact of winter weather, most Barrow County offices will open at noon on Wednesday, Jan. 22, provided conditions allow for it. The Barrow County Senior Center will be closed for the entire day.

The delayed schedule includes Barrow County’s administrative offices, courts, animal shelter and facilities at Victor Lord Park.

Essential public works and public safety personnel will remain on duty. A decision on fully closing offices will be made no later than 9 a.m. Wednesday.

While road conditions continue to improve across the county, Icy conditions may still exist in shady areas on roadways. Continue to use the utmost caution if you be out on the road.

HAZARDOUS ROAD CONDITIONS: Simply put, don't travel. Roadways across Athens-Clarke County continue to get worse due to icy conditions and are closing due to not only the ice itself, but due to resulting accidents and abandoned vehicles.

Even if a road isn't closed and you absolutely have to be out, avoid travel down any road where you see accidents or vehicles abandoned due to icy conditions.
