As you’ve seen on our front page this issue, The Spoke covered the “Save Chinatown” movement in Philadelphia in response to the proposal of the 76ers arena that would likely gentrify and displace many residents in the area. The ongoing fight not only demonstrates unjust discrimination toward the oppressed in Philadelphia, but also toward youth and marginalized groups as a whole, a conclusion I’ve come to from my experiences working with multiracial kids this summer and the Sept. 7 “Save Chinatown” rally at City Hall.

On Friday, students lined the stands in black as the varsity football team played its blackout homecoming game against Harriton. Winning 35-6, the boys’ overall record improves to 1-4.

Starting the game strong, senior James Quici scored the first touchdown of the game. After a second touchdown by senior Timmy Bruder, the team ended the first quarter up 14-0.

On Wednesday, the Tredyffrin/Easttown School District held an open house event for the public to tour the future sixth elementary school site from 6:30-8 p.m. Earlier that day, TESD invited all district staff to explore the area as well.

At both events, attendees looked around the office building at 1200 West Swedesford Road, which the district plans to reuse as the new elementary school.

On Sept. 3, the boys’ soccer team took on Strath Haven High School on Teamer Field.

Strath Haven initially took the lead, scoring a goal in the first seven minutes. After a few near-misses from the Pioneers, senior Colin Clark tied the score. With 3 minutes left in the first half, senior Ian Navarro put Conestoga ahead with assists from seniors Zuwa Abhulimen and Michael Bedwick, finishing 2-1.

The girls’ field hockey team defeated Strath Haven 9-0 on Tuesday.

The girls started strong in the first quarter, with goals scored by seniors Hannah Simon and Shae Wozniak and sophomore Peyton Esposito to secure a 3-0 lead. No goals were scored in the second quarter.

The girls’ soccer team secured a 5-0 victory over Downingtown East on Tuesday during its first game of the season.

Junior Kate Kemmerly began the scoring for ’Stoga in the first half, and the team maintained the 1-0 lead until halftime. In the second half, senior Amelie Stewart extended the lead to 2-0.

On June 4, Conestoga held the commencement ceremony for the Class of 2024, the largest class in school history. The event began at 6 p.m. with a speech from principal Dr. Amy Meisinger and the national anthem sung by senior Camerata members. Following the performance, TESD Superintendent Dr. Richard Gusick, school board president Todd Kantorczyk and student council executive president Michael Tierney gave speeches recognizing the class’s perseverance over the past four years.

In a negative mental state, then freshman Ally Wen turned to her local YMCA, searching for solace in exercise.

“When I started, my confidence was definitely down,” Wen said. “It takes a lot of time to build confidence, but I feel like the main thing with confidence is knowing that you’re putting work into yourself and not cheating yourself out of your goals.”
