Taylor greets descendants of school founder Percy T. Magan at Sutherland House

Andrews University President John Wesley Taylor V, left, greets Julianna Magan, second from left, and her parents, Andy and Cindy Magan, and sister, Clara.

Julianna is a transfer student from Southern Adventist University, completing her professional program for speech language pathology at Andrews.

Julianna and Clara are great-great-great granddaughters of Percy T. Magan, one of the two major founders, along with Edward A. Sutherland, of the Andrews campus in Berrien Springs, having moved the college from Battle Creek Michigan in 1901. Magan was a widely influential church administrator, who, with Sutherland, later founded Madison College in Tennessee, and then was dean of the medical school and later president of what is now Loma Linda University in California.

Taylor greeted the Magan family on Sabbath afternoon, August 19, at Sutherland House, the last remaining and now historic landmark that Sutherland and Magan built on the Andrews campus in 1902. It is the headquarters of Andrews University Press, the primary academic publishing house to serve the Adventist Church.

The Magan family lives in Northern California. Clara is a senior at Fountainview Academy in British Columbia this fall, and another sister, Amelia, is enrolled at Southern Adventist University.

The General Conference Biblical Research Institute (BRI) and Andrews University have partnered to publish a book for general and classroom readers that theologically examines each of the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s fundamental beliefs.

Titled “God with Us: An Introduction to Adventist Theology,” the book is authored by John C. Peckham, research professor of theology and Christian philosophy at Andrews University and recently appointed associate editor of Adventist Review/Adventist World. The book was commissioned and edited by BRI, with its first purpose to be a foundational, accessible and yet scholarly introduction to Adventist belief for undergraduate and graduate students. Published by Andrews University Press, the world church’s primary academic publishing house, “God with Us” is also designed and promoted beyond the classroom for the general readership of the Church.

Elias Brasil de Souza, BRI director, who also wrote the foreword to the book, said, “We are very glad to have partnered with Andrews University to bring this work to the Adventist world and beyond. It is much needed. There have been other textbooks dealing with Adventist doctrine, and other presentations of our fundamental beliefs. Peckham’s work stands out because of his thoughtful, highly readable presentation, which is informed by his perspective as one of our church’s leading theologians.”

Broad editorial aspects of Peckham’s work were supervised by Frank M. Hasel, associate director of the Biblical Research Institute. In his role as theological editor, Hasel arranged for review of Peckham’s work by other theologians and worked with Peckham to put the manuscript in its final form for submission to Andrews for publication. “The title of Peckham’s book beautifully describes the organizing principle behind his treatment of Adventist doctrine,” Hasel said. “Peckham shows that, in the most profound way, every aspect of foundational biblical theology, as understood by Adventists, is framed by God’s desire to be with and for His people. We see that most obviously in creation, the incarnation, the Sabbath, the second coming, the sanctuary and, as Peckham skillfully shows, in every other aspect of our fundamental beliefs. His insightful interaction with other theological positions gives the reader a deeper understanding of the beauty, coherence and uniqueness of Adventist theology. His book will be a significant reference point for Adventist theology for years to come.”

Dwight K. Nelson, former lead pastor of Pioneer Memorial Church at Andrews University, said, “‘God with Us’ is classic Peckham—carefully reasoned, meticulously shaped, yet winsomely user-friendly for life beyond the academy.”

John McVay, president of Walla Walla University, wrote, “If you are looking for clear, accessible writing tracing the grandest stories and themes while unpacking gentle, persuasive, reasoned faith, you’ve found it.”

Sung Wook Chung, a well-known evangelical professor of Christian theology at Denver Seminary, endorsed the book by saying, “This excellent piece of theological work will lead to John Peckham being regarded as one of the most authoritative voices alive today on Adventist theology. A must-read for anyone interested in the contemporary shape of not only Adventist theology but also broader evangelical theology.

Peckham was a professor of theology and Christian philosophy at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews for 10 years before his recent appointment as an editor of Adventist Review/Adventist World. Previously, he taught at Southwestern Adventist University. Several of his previous books have been released to wide acclaim by Baker, Eerdmans and other evangelical publishers. “God with Us” was released by Andrews University Press in mid-August and is receiving wide interest. A pre-publication sale late in July sparked a strong response from individual purchasers, and several Adventist conferences are ordering the book for distribution to their pastors. The book will be used in classrooms in Adventist colleges and universities beginning this fall.

“God with Us” is available now from Adventist Book Centers (800-765-6955) and from Andrews University Press (universitypress.andrews.edu, 800-467-6369).

One of the last residents of Sutherland House enrolls daughter at Andrews

This week, Manuel Avitia (left) and his family (daughter Sea, son Story, and wife Denise) were at Andrews to enroll Sea as a freshman. She plans to major in religion with secondary education.

Manuel was a child in the early 1980s when his father was a student at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary. The family of six--two parents, Manuel, and his three siblings--lived in a very small apartment on the first floor of what is now known as Sutherland House. The building had been in poor repair for several years, and shortly after the Avitias left, it was scheduled for demolition. However, a university trustee, Elsie Landon Buck, persuaded the university administration to save the building because it was the institution’s last architectural link to the pioneers of the Berrien Springs campus. It had been built in 1902, as the home of Edward A. Sutherland, the college president who moved Battle Creek College to Berrien Springs in 1901.

Through the decades the house had been used for many different purposes, and finally for married student housing. Young Manuel’s family were some of the last residents. Manuel remembers many things about the house from his childhood more than forty years ago, including getting burned on an old steam radiator in his tiny bedroom, and riding his bike and sledding down the steep path by the house to the Pathfinder Building.

Mrs. Buck raised $160,000 to save the building, and it was rededicated in June 1987, first as the headquarters of the General Conference Institute of World Mission, and, since 2005 as the home of Andrews University Press, the primary academic publishing house to serve the Adventist church worldwide.

The Avitias now live in San Diego, California, where Sea graduated from San Diego Academy. Story will be a sophomore at the same school this fall. Manual is an attorney practicing as a public defender for San Diego County, with a special interest in constitutional law. Denise is a publications teacher at San Diego Academy and the Avitias operate Christian Book and Nutrition, a bookstore in National City, California. Denise says she finds it noteworthy that Manuel lived in Sutherland House as a boy and now he and Denise have come full circle to purchase publications from this very same location for their bookstore as they enroll their daughter at Andrews.

Sutherland House was the very first building constructed on the Berrien Springs campus. It is 121 years old.

This minimalist booklet provides the student of biblical Hebrew with a panoramic view of the morphological forms of the language. The focus is on the panoramic reception of tables rather than any detailed explanation of morphological features or functions of verbal tenses and prepositions. Its convenient and concise format is ideal for supplementing textbooks in the preparation for quizzes and exams. Using this booklet will greatly facilitate the learning process for anyone eager to dive into the original Hebrew of the biblical text. Rehearsing the paradigms on a regular basis will make the reading of the Hebrew Bible easier, and the task of exegesis can be carried out more efficiently.

"Much as it might like to, the church can no longer evade questions about homosexuality and same-sex marriage, for society is, with increasing stridency, forcing Christians to confront them."
Some religious thought leaders, taking their cue from popular culture and current politics, are trying to make a case for biblical support of the practice of homosexuality and same-sex marriage. Their efforts create serious confusion while challenging the church's ability to sensitively address one of the most explosive spiritual and public policy issues of our time.

In this volume, Christian scholars offer a deep resource of material—biblical, clinical, and legal—to untangle the complex web of questions surrounding this contested topic. The authors first provide a frank and rigorous explication of the Bible's clear teaching. Then they lay out the implications for counseling and for the religious liberty of the church and its members. And through it all, they make an impassioned call for love and care for those who are being misled into a walk down a dangerous path. The book includes moving testimonies from several Christians who have lived and struggled with homosexuality in their personal lives and can praise God for empowering them to live for Him.

In the threatening environment facing the church and society today, every Christian administrator, attorney, teacher, counselor, pastor, and congregational leader should read this book.

God’s salvation of humanity, as presented in the Scriptures, will always be the highest, most sublime, and more rewarding of all theological subjects. It is a truth that is both startlingly simple and profoundly complex—as simple as knowing that “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so,” and so complex that the Apostle Paul described this intricate cosmic drama as “the mystery of godliness” (1 Tim. 3:16, NKJV).
Throughout Christian history, many debates have raged about this greatest of all topics, often resulting in schisms, anathemas, and bloodshed. And the debate continues among Christians today.
In this landmark volume, organized by the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews University, nineteen scholars collectively present the most comprehensive treatment of this topic to be published in the Adventist world.

When the first two chapters of Genesis say that God created our world and the human race in a particular way, did the Bible really mean that? If not, can it really mean what it says about everything else, particularly the grand themes of redemption and eschatology?

In this companion volume to one published about creation in the Old Testament, fifteen scholars carry the question into the New Testament. This work provides a detailed cultural, historical, and theological background to the topic and section-by-section exegetical studies of how the creation theme is illuminated by the various New Testament writers. So is creation and the creation account of Genesis 1 and 2 a major theme in the New Testament? This volume answers that question with a resounding “yes.”

Protest & Progress
Black Seventh-day Adventist Leadership and the Push for Parity
By Calvin B. Rock

Calvin Rock has produced a landmark book on race relations and leadership in the Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America. As an acclaimed leader himself, Rock writes with a pastor’s heart and a prophet’s passion to remind the church of where we have been, where we are, and where we must go. He first gives an overview of history by discussing the successes and failures of four major Black Adventist leadership protest movements: the push for administrative integration, which failed; the push for Regional conferences, which succeeded; the push for Black union conferences, which failed; and the push for a separate and equitable retirement system for Regional conference employees, which succeeded. Rock’s personal participation in some of the events adds rich character to the story. Building on that history, he makes his case for the effectiveness and necessity of the current Regional conference system of mission that administers resources according to racial and cultural opportunity.

About the Author
Calvin B. Rock has been a major leadership voice in the Seventh-day Adventist Church for more than six decades as a pastor, church administrator, and writer. He was president of Oakwood University from 1971 to 1985, and a general vice president of the General Conference from 1985 until his retirement in 2002. He has been an active participant in North American Adventism’s continuing discussions of race relations. He holds a BA degree in theology from Oakwood University, an MA in sociology from the University of Detroit, and DMin and PhD degrees in religious ethics from Vanderbilt University. He is the author or editor of ten books. In retirement in Las Vegas, Nevada, he returned to active pastoring and has a heart for helping the church better understand the full meaning of the Righteousness of Christ.

1:5–8. Wisdom, Prayer, and Faith. Structurally, this passage is linked with the previous
one by the use of the word leipō (“to lack”; vv. 4–5). James, at this point, moves from
moral integrity to wisdom. His readers already know that trials experienced with perseverance will mature Christians so that they
may lack nothing. But a question immediately
arises: where can one get the wisdom to interpret these trials in the right way? James’s
answer is that believers should ask God, who
will give abundantly and without rebuke (v. 5).
The imperative verbal form used here implies
a command for people to ask if they truly wish
to obtain wisdom. - from Andrews Bible Commentary
