Bay Nature magazine Bay Nature magazine tells the stories of nature, wildlife, & environment in the SF Bay Area

"I cannot express how enthusiastic I am about Bay Nature... if we can get the local population to understand even one-tenth as much about living systems as they do about operating systems, we can transform the nine-county region." - Paul Hawken, Author

For this Winter print feature, Sonya Bennett-Brandt got up close with Lake Tahoe's personae non gratae—the algae and invasives that seem to be in cahoots, threatening Tahoe's famously clear blue water (and all the tourism that depends upon it).

"Suddenly, it occurs to me that I’m holding a dirty bomb. Sprinkled into the wrong waters, these dozen clams could be the vanguard of a new invasion, making me personally responsible for the slime-ification of some pristine inlet. Panicked, I take off one sock, stuff them into it, and tie a knot at the top for good measure. Becoming an AIS vector is alarmingly easy."

Can we keep Lake Tahoe's aquatic invaders at bay?

Most cattle are leaving Point Reyes National Seashore, under a new agreement made in closed-door mediation. Land is to be restored, and tule elk allowed to roam. But on Saturday, angry community members flooded a town hall meeting in Point Reyes. Lisa M. Krieger reports.

Most cattle will leave, and an ambitious plan aims to restore coastal scrub, grasslands, and chaparral. But the agreement immediately drew fire from community members, who decry the loss of working ranches and farmworkers.

Even experts may struggle to distinguish our local sapsuckers, given how they've been mixing things up at mating season. Here's what's going on (it's truly complicated!). https://baynature.org/article/a-sapsucker-superspecies-is-evolving-in-our-midst/

Rows of pea-size holes, drilled in the trunks of thin-barked trees, are the beginnings of a story that stretches back millions of years. Here's how these birds' family tree got so complicated.

A Slime of One's Own: "Your quarry will be visible to the naked eye when it joins forces by the thousands into blobby shapes—like undercooked pancakes left on logs at Tilden Park, or a lattice of high-gloss mustard in the hills near Mount Tam," writes H.R. Smith, on slime molds.

As the Bay Area’s last undeveloped valley, the North Livermore area offers unique habitat for endangered and threatened animals—a rest stop for migrating hawks, a hunting ground for golden eagles, a home for red-legged frogs and California tiger salamanders. Soon, it will also be home to Aramis, the Bay Area’s largest solar farm. Local critics failed to stop the project—but it seems their advocacy may have led to more environmental protections, Tanvi Dutta Gupta reports.
