Recently, the state of California released beavers into the wild for the first time in 75 years. It was a family of seven translocated from Sutter County onto the ancestral lands of the Mountain Maidu people in Plumas County.

“In 2022 California introduced new policies that embrace beavers as partners in supporting biodiversity, healing water systems, and reducing fires,” Erica Gies writes in Bay Nature's new Winter 2024 feature. But that’s after many years of official beaver policy that treated these remarkable rodents as unwanted pests. “Today’s beaver-friendlier approach,” Gies writes, “will catch up California with other western states.”

Oakland's Urban Tree Dreams Get (Partially) Funded

“Trees are a social justice issue. We need everyone's participation,” says Oakland's tree services supervisor David Moore, who worked on a new plan to kick-start the city's tree canopy restoration. Oakland has received an $8 million Inflation Reduction Act grant from the U.S. Forest Service to launch the program.

King Tide Season

The next big ones will arrive Jan. 11–12. Here’s why these extreme tides happen—and how you can help document them, so we can all prepare for sea-level rise. “Photographing today’s extreme high tides gives us a window into the everyday water level of the future,” says Annie Frankel of the California King Tides Project. Guananí Gómez-Van Cortright has the story.

Here’s Why a Dozen Horizontal Levees Have Sprouted Around the Bay

Strips of land at the water’s edge are being put to work on multiple fronts: building natural resilience to rising tides, providing habitat, and purifying treated wastewater before it runs into the Bay. Anushuya Thapa reports on what’s so fabulous about these flattish, flood-fighting new land features.

As Cities Heat Up, USDA Grants $46 Million for Bay Area Urban Trees

Here’s a local look at a nationwide push to plant more trees in cities. As part of our Wild Billions coverage, Helen Doyle dives into urban forestry around the Bay and the (many!) cities and local organizations aiming to get trees in the ground with federal money. Hopefully, these trees will help fight against climate change and offer cities a chance to address historic injustices, prioritizing planting in underserved communities.

All Vaxxed Up and Ready to Roost

Six captive-bred California condors were released last week near San Simeon in Central California. This batch has what conservationists hope will be a superpower: a vaccine against the avian flu that’s ripping through birds worldwide. Guananí Gómez-Van Cortright reports on the first tentative steps of Condor 1139 and the rest of his carrion-loving, nine-cohort.
