LUCKY Episode 13. Good morning. After a long pause in releasing episodes of our show we are back. It’s been a crazy October, and we are happy to say we have landed and got our feet back on the ground. Today we put a bow on our tour of the BBQ & Fly-In on the River in Excelsior Springs. Absolutely one of the most well run and most fun contests we attend each year. We never miss this one and if it’s not on your list it should be.

We met up with some great BBQ folks that are always a good time. We bring you Kevin Heese of Weekend Bum BBQ on the back of a Tow Truck. We also bring Eric Watts of Fairway Smokers with Chicken Secrets (ok we didn’t break him) and Dan Boles of All Forked Up for Q. We have all kinds of fun on this one and do our Best to keep the Train from falling off the Tracks. Have you noticed the longer we “work” on Friday at a contest the sloppier we get. LOL This one looks really long but we have a Bonus for you in this episode. Halfway in we take a pause and watch the Fireworks that the BBQ & Fly In on the River does each year. One of the best fireworks shows at any BBQ contest.

It’s the end of July and we rolled South and West to Miami, OK (MiaMA) and literally cooked our buns on the streets of MiaMA in the 105-degree heat. We also met with several teams this weekend and we’ll be bringing you those conversations over the next 3 weeks. Listen and enjoy, we know you are going to enjoy Episode 9.

This week we meet with Machete Boys BBQ. David Ellis, Kristen, and Christine make up this great team from Minneapolis MN. We discussed all things from Pork to Ice Fishing. We had a great time talking and getting to know these great folks.

We finish up our conversations with 2 great teams in Osceola at Smoke on the Osage. We know you are going to enjoy Episode 8.

This week’s episode could not come with better timing. Joel Fleetwood and I meet with Curt Wallace of Smoked and Furious and A-A-AaaaaRon and Christy of Man Meat BBQ. If you did not know both Curt, Aaron and Christy are the newly Crowned KCBS World Championship BBQ WORLD CHAMPIONS. Curt won the OPEN contest with a monster 717 and change score, breaking a 22 yearlong record held by a Legend, Donnie Teel. Aaron and Christy put on a Clinic scoring a 711 RGC in the OPEN then turned around on Day 2 and bested the field to WIN the Grand Champion in the Invitational. We are so proud of all these guys and what they have accomplished this year. It’s a long one but hang and watch to the end. This was a lot of fun we know you will enjoy it.

We had a fantastic time at the KCBS World invitational BBQ in Mayetta at the Prairie Band Casino & Resort. We always enjoyed competing at their venue. Rolled in and had a lot of fun at an impromptu sing-a-ling Dance party Thursday night at Damn Yankee Texas BBQ site Joel and Lacy really know their 90’s hippity hop songs. Friday we recovered and enjoyed the day getting ready for the first of three World championships to come in the next couple months.

Open Day 1 Beck and I had some success with a
7th place chicken
10th place Rib
23rd pork
51st Brisket
Overall 11th place out of 90 great teams. We were very happy and proud of our results

Invitational Day 2 flip the script. We were solidly in the 50% that makes the TOP 50% possible.

As disappointed, tired and exhausted as we were nothing beats the feeling of watching the people you care about do so well. Aaron and Christy of Man Meat BBQ put on a clinic, on one of the biggest stages in BBQ. Reserved Grand Champion Day 1 and then turned around and pulled out a Grand Championship Day 2 to become World Champions. The old retired coach in me says this is the lesson for all girls and boys. As tough as I know coming up short in day one was. Get Up, dust yourself off, get to work and do it again. These two work as hard as anyone ever has and they earned these honors. Huge Congratulations Truly fantastic! ❤️

Congratulations also to the Day 1 Grand Champion Curt of Smoked & Furious BBQ Team who put up a huge number with a 717 score breaking a 22 year long KCBS high score record. It has been great getting to know you and hang with you the past couple weeks. Epic cook. Great Job!

Congratulations also to Janky Leg BBQ on the Reserve Grand in Day 2. Always a joy getting to hang out with you all.
