I had the pleasure of designing and printing this project for the transnational record label, , which was produced in bilingual Spanish and English text, and includes a CD that slips into the jacket.

“In contemporary northeastern Mexico, it is known with certainty that the “picota” or “música de tambora” has been played since at least 1880. Although this makes it the oldest musical expression known from the region, few remnants have been found that reveal precise clues about its origin.” -Rene Velarde (translated and abridged from their essay)

The CD collects a series of field recordings of this rarely heard Mexican folk music, captured on tape in 1990, and collected here with a series of essays exploring the past and speculative futures of the music.

The original tapes were recorded by Raul Garcia Flores, and decades later landed in the hands of Transitory Tapes co-founder and experimental musician Patricio Coronado, who took creative liberties in mastering them. His essay, “Notes on Post-Production” closes the publication and exposes his process and connections with the music.

Special thanks to .mty and for their part in making this project possible.

While in NYC I had a chance to see the latest show from one of my favorite artists! Kari Cholnoky’s “Horizontal Loader” features a bunch of her latest mutant creations that have been born somewhere between painting and sculpture. I’m posting a mix of detail and installation views here, but if you find yourself in NYC, best to go and see for yourself. The exhibition is currently on view through January 13th via 🤩

The last time I visited NY was in 2019, in a quartet of cross-country travel that seemed likely to wash me up on the East coast… but it would seem the pandemic had other plans for me.

It’s amazing to visit again, and to find recognition and friendship in this magical and complicated city at the heart of the monster that is America. I’m hyped to connect with new people and show all the books made since my last visit! Huge shoutout to of for hosting my adventure, and publishing some beautiful stuff on the other side of the turtle.

Sounding for Harry Smith by Bret Lunsford is being distributed through , published by Lunsford’s own imprint,

This book takes the subject of polymath artist, archivist, and cult figure, Harry Everett Smith, at it’s center, and uncovers a history of Bellingham and Anacortes, where Smith spent his early years. Smith lived in an Anacortes cannery, amidst a community of eccentric settlers, and frequently arranged meetings with the neighboring Lummi and Nooksack tribes to document some of their songs and stories, and collect cultural artifacts, which were collected and assembled in a museum-like display within the defunct cannery warehouse of Smith’s family.

Fastidiously researched by author Bret Lunsford, who some may recognize from his days in the band or from his time operating , this is likely the most exhaustive history that will ever be written of Harry Everett Smith, and this book becomes as much a regional history as a biography of its central figure.

2023 would have been Harry Smith’s 100th birthday, and the is currently presenting the first ever career retrospective of his work, including many public performances, since it’s opening on October 4th.
