Our first story of the quarter is now live!

Centering Residents in the Central District

“The face of a historically Black neighborhood in Seattle is changing rapidly. New zoning regulations and demands for housing are driving development throughout the Central District, perpetuating a decades-long process of gentrification and displacement.

From 1970 to 2020, parts of Seattle’s Central District saw the percentage of Black residents drop from more than 90% down to 11%, according to spatial analysts at the University of Washington.

“It’s like watching your home kind of be destroyed,” said local Vivian Phillips. She is the founder and board president of Arte Noir, an arts center in the Central District focused on highlighting the work of Black artists.”

Meet Margaret, our Science Editor!

Why are you passionate about the environment?: “I work hard on trying to get rid of scientific jargon. Information about the environment is sometimes given in such intense language, but we all deserve to know about the world we live in because it's pretty cool.”

Meet Jacob, out Public Editor!

What is an aspect of your major/ minor that you really enjoy?: “An aspect I enjoy about my combination of majors is their emphasis on taking what is normally abstract and oftentimes inaccessible, science, and making it relevant and understandable to the general public. I also love how closely intertwined Environmental Justice is with ethics, whereas straight non-social sciences exclude non-empirical fact as a rule, which necessitates a different way of looking at complex social justice issues that have to do with the environment--Environmental Studies and Environmental Justice. The Public Relations element helps me understand how to communicate with audiences better. Before I started taking PR and journalism classes I could know a great deal but not be able to help others understand it--and what good is information if it can't be shared? In short, I enjoy how my multiple disciplines of study work together to help me accomplish my love of learning and sharing what I've learned.”

How do you beat the winter blues?: “I beat the winter blues by drinking hot chocolate and reading a good book. I'm reading this epic fantasy novel right now called "The Way of Thorn and Thunder" by Daniel Heath Justice.”

Stay tuned later this week to meet our Science Editor!
