If it wasn’t for the inaugural Rockin’ Yule Bizarre that took place in December 2016, the Anacortes Music Project may have never come to fruition. But thanks to a group of friends who had the bright idea to bring light to the darkest time of the year in the form of a holiday hoedown featuring a lineup of local musicians, the intention to form the nonprofit dedicated to amplifying the music and musicians of Anacortes was set in motion.

The two boxes of cornbread stuffing mix, pine nuts and chicken stock I purchased at the grocery store last week was an attempt to get ahead of the curve where Thanksgiving dinner is concerned. But when the cashier unloading my cart took note of the feast-focused ingredients, he advised me that when it came to securing a turkey, I shouldn’t dawdle—the first shipment of birds had sold out within a few hours, and demand was high.
