THIS WEEK on THE WILD: WOLVERINES

This fan favorite explores Mount Rainer National Park and how for the first time in 100 years, wolverines are back. How did they get there?

In the summer of 2020, there was some big news for wildlife in the pacific northwest. In the wild spaces of Mount Rainier National Park, a female wolverine was discovered along with two babies known as kits. It is believed that these tenacious predators haven't been in the park for over a century. The wolverines were back. This is the story of the return of the wolverines and the woman who searched for 15 years to find them.

“Some days it feels like our lab instruments are just black boxes that do voodoo magic. But we've seen it over and over again, and it's tried and true, but likely in the soil sample, it's skin cells, you know, that that cougar is leaving, it's walking and it's leaving, or hair.”

This week on THE WILD: eDNA - so what is it????
“It's actually, by the definition, the e is just environmental DNA. So what it means is we captured air or water or soil rather than actually touching the fish or the animal that shed it...We are capturing its leftovers.”
- Dr. Eily Andruszkiewicz Allan, Chief Scientist at the eDNA Collaborative at the University of Washington

Imagine the leftovers in this Jaguar print from Belize!

Top secret military dolphins, exploding whales, and invasive green crabs. These are all things Dr. Eily Andruszkiewicz Allan is interested in learning more about. And she is doing it all with the help of a simple cup of water. It's a revolutionary bit of technology called eDNA and it is changing the way biologists are doing field work. eDNA could hold the mysteries of a new frontier in our understanding of the natural world.

This week on THE WILD: An episode for movie buffs, music nuts, animal lovers, and anyone dealing with anxiety. Yes, that's quite the range in a 40-minute chat, but Dr Dan Blumstein delivers them all in a fascinating conversation with me about FEAR. Hot on the heels of Cuyahoga Valley and Great Smokey Mountains National Parks.....next stop right now--Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska. I've been all over this massive and spectacular state that's 7 times bigger than my native homeland of the UK, but this is my first time in Glacier Bay and I'm PSYCHED! It's a great story of ecological rebound that we'll be telling as glaciers become rivers and turn into habitat. 💚🌎💚

Biscayne National Park is not what most Americans think of when they imagine a national park. 95% of it is underwater. So to really get out into the park, we had to rent a boat.

The mythology of the open road speaks to us all…calling us for adventure.
But American wildlife might have something else to say about that.
This week’s episode features a fascinating conversation with author Ben Goldfarb (yes-from the Beavers episode!) who traveled the world for answers…About ROADS.
