BFD would like to announce Chief Andy Fissel’s retirement on July 31st.
Andy has served 26 years with BFD. He worked his way up the ladder by serving 5 years as firefighter, 11 years as Assistant Chief, and 10 years as Chief.
During his tenure he has brought many changes to the department, including hiring the first two female firefighters. He improved the City’s ISO rating from 5 to 4, which directly affects insurance rates for the commercial and residential citizens. Having to think outside of the box, he was awarded $2.7 million in federal grants to replace the aging fleet plus other needs for the department. He fought hard to increase staffing from 19 to 23 members. He made MANY contacts in the community and worked hard to foster relationships with surrounding departments. At his closing, he is currently in the process of helping to implement the Community Paramedic Program.
As Chief, he has had many challenges thrown his way during his tenure, including: bedbugs at the station, Covid protocols, staffing issues, testing changes, 3 different City Safety Service Directors, and 3 Mayors.
He would like to thank the community for all of your involvement over the years. Also, thank you to the hardworking men and women of BFD.
There will not be an open house for Chief Fissel but feel free to reach out.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 race for the White House on Sunday, ending his bid for reelection following a disastrous debate with Donald Trump that raised doubts about his fitness for office just four months before the election.

The decision comes after escalating pressure from Biden’s Democratic allies to step aside following the June 27 debate, in which the 81-year-old president trailed off and often gave nonsensical answers.

Biden plans to serve out the remainder of his term in office, which ends at noon on Jan. 20, 2025.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote in a letter posted to his X account.

Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris via social media to be nominated as the Democratic candidate for President.

Dedication Set for Mills Brothers Mural

The Mills Brothers mural, located on the south wall of the Park National Bank building at 212 N. Main Street, will be completed later this month. The mural features the four Mills Brothers, Harry, Herb, Don and John, Jr. and their father John, Sr. John Jr. was a part of the group until his early death at the age of 25 in 1936. John, Sr. joined the group and continued to be a part of the Mills Brothers until 1956 when he retired. Kim Hassel from Columbus, a great-niece of the Mills Brothers, was instrumental in determining the design and content of the mural.

The Mills Brothers outstanding career was highlighted by a Command Performance at the Palladium in London, the first black artists to do so; they sang at a State Dinner at the White House; they were recognized with a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame; Lifetime Achievement Award from Ebony Magazine; Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

The Mills Brothers illustrious career started in Piqua.

The Mills Brothers Mural dedication is set for Thursday, August 1st at 5 p.m. in the Park National Bank parking lot in front of the mural. Anyone interested in attending the event is welcome. The dedication will feature brief remarks, Mills Brothers music, and a chance to meet the mural artists Michael Boudreault and Chris McDaniels of Artisan Rooms based in Columbus, Ohio. Since the Park National Bank parking lot is in the DORA (Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area) anyone wishing to get a drink from a downtown establishment is welcome to bring it to the dedication.

The Mills Brothers mural project is being lead by community volunteers Ruth A. Koon and Lorna Swisher and would not have been possible without the support of Friends of Mainstreet Piqua, the Mainstreet Piqua Beautification committee, and Mainstreet Piqua Executive Director Staci Roth.
The total cost of the project will be almost $70,000 and no tax dollars from the city of Piqua were used for this outstanding addition to our city. The project was funded entirely by local foundations and private donors. Congratulations to Piqua for recognizing these music legends, The Mills Brothers.
