As a new team in 2023, the Memorial 7 JV Spartans had a good season finishing runner-up in the Gold Bracket. In 2024, the team challenged themselves to step up their game. Each player rotated into multiple positions and contributed a high level of play to result in a 14-0 undefeated season and victory at the JV M7 championship.

Carnegie Vanguard High School senior Anna Oliva traveled to Stockholm, Sweden this month to attend the Nobel Prize Award ceremony and participate in the Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar along with over 1,000 students between the ages of 18 and 25. The trip was part of a prize package awarded to her at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Los Angeles, Calif., where she placed first in the Mathematics category.

The Concert Against Cancer Fundraiser, benefiting The Broach Foundation for Brain Cancer Research, was founded in memory of Tom Bres, who passed away from glioblastoma in 2015. His daughter, Meg, founded Concert Against Cancer to raise awareness and funding for The Broach Foundation. The 2024 Concert Against Cancer, marking its 10th year, takes place this Saturday, 7 p.m. at Axelrad Beer Garden. Read more in this 2023 story:

Meg Bres organized Concert Against Cancer in memory of her father, Tom Bres, who passed away in 2015 from brain cancer. The annual fundraising event benefits The Broach Foundation for Brain Cancer Research. This year’s concert, featuring local musicians, takes place tonight, 7 p.m. at Axelrad.

"I gave my first tour as a docent at the MUSEUM HOUSTON in 1997. Since then, I’ve given probably nearly 400 tours to thousands of people over the years. Many have asked why I do it, and others have questioned how I am able to lead tours on such a sad topic. How could I not?" In this powerful 2019 Buzz article, Russell Weil shared the stories of local Holocaust survivors. Russell is scheduled to lead his final tour on Saturday, Dec. 21, after nearly 28 years of dedicated service. The public is invited to join Russell for his final tour on Saturday at 1 p.m. Admission to the museum is free that day.

Stella's STE Sparkle Squad team, comprised of nearly 70 supporters from the St. Thomas’ Episcopal School community, participated in the MD Anderson Boot Walk to End Cancer. Last summer, Stella Trevino, a preschooler at STE, was diagnosed with nephroblastoma, a rare, cancerous kidney tumor, and her school family wanted to do something to help.
