Apparently Yellowstone Lake refroze for the fishing opener? A buddy sent me pics from over a week ago showing about 50 feet of open water… What looks like open water in this pic is thick slush.

... a late addition to your fly-fishing holiday gift guides: my recent book "Tributary." This unique and well-reviewed book covers a myriad of topics around fly fishing in Montana, Wyoming, and Yellowstone National Park. And you don't have to worry that they already have it 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️😂.

I had to do something to fill my time over the past few months… Thrilled to bring you my newest book, "Tributary: Fishing the Northern Rockies’ Periphery."

Tributary is an 8.5x11, 290-page compendium of my published fishing writing and photography from 2006-2020, and is a fun and easy insiders’ supplement to the how-to and where-to guidebooks. Flooded with photos, it provides a fresh look at fly fishing culture, science, locations, and techniques in Montana and Wyoming (and maybe even a little about Idaho). It’s fly-fishing edutainment at its recycledest!

Not because I think there’s such demand for this content; I just wanted to keep busy during the COVID winter, and that morphed into experimenting with some automated print-on-demand platforms, etc.

The e-book is free for a limited time on Amazon Kindle Unlimited, or for $4.99 without Unlimited. The print version (black and white) is available now on Amazon for $14.99, and a full-color print version will be available soon from Barnes & Noble! If you read and enjoy, please leave a review!

A special (on a Friday): Christmas Edition. Pa rum pum pum pum and fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la!

Ernest Schwiebert, probably best known today for his treatises on entomology, was also a gifted storyteller. “A River for Christmas,” which appeared in the Late Season 1978 issue of Fly Fisherman magazine, is a response of sorts to Roderick Haig-Browns’ Fisherman’s Winter. It details how the fishing changed in Chile after the unrest following the Allende election of 1970, and the big fish Schwiebert managed. Interestingly, six out of the eight pages of this article are fully text – something that would not fly with today’s readership. This story would later appear in Schwiebert’s well-reviewed book of the same title.

Excerpt: “The fresh log started to burn brightly, and I laughed softly when Dufflocq poured more cognac. ‘What’s funny?’ he asked.
‘Nothing!’ I smiled. ‘Just thinking about what a fine present the Cumilahue would make – and about getting a river for Christmas!’”

Here's to finding ways to cope in difficult times. These Montana servicemen and women used fly fishing, even though they were in stationed in Iraq. Thanks to all our military members for making it possible for us to keep fishing at home.
