Northern Latitudes on WBFY - Belfast Community Radio this week offers two hours of music for breathing, relaxing, restoring....meditating even. As usual, I'll play all sorts of music. In the second hour, the middle set will be full-on meditative and New Age: a good time to lean back, close your eyes and step away from the stresses of campaigns and advertising.

Among many others, you'll hear Brian Eno, Enya (four tracks!), a duet by Chet Atkins and Tommy Emmanuel, and R Carlos Nakai on Native American flute. This show will feel good, and be good for your health.

No kidding, you will hear folk, Native American, Chinese-Appalachian fusion, Great American Songbook (including a deep dive into All of Me), ukulele and the Mark Knopfler's sound track from the movie Local Hero.

Are you ready for this? Can you keep up?! You'll hear Abigail Washburn teaming up with the Shanghai Restoration Project, Connor Garvey from Portland Maine, Del Rey and three tracks from Local Hero.

Hey kids, I'm back......from a six-week honeymoon: four weeks in the Scottish Highlands and two weeks in southern Portugal. It was even better than it sounds. Simply sublime. So, this week it's Northern Latitudes: the Honeymoon in Scotland and Portugal edition.

The show includes songs by contemporary Scottish artists, a railroad set, a road set and other odds and ends (as usual). Among many others, you'll hear Alba's Edge (including Neil Pearlman), Dougie MacLean, Mist & Wing and Westward the Wind.

This week, it's Northern Latitudes: the Blueberries & Bluegrass Edition to celebrate an event in Winterport Maine on Saturday August 3, from noon to 4. So, by the time the show kicks off, the Blueberries & Bluegrass Festifal will be half over. Make plans to go to the festival, then listen to my show replay on Sunday at 6am or Tuesday at 1pm. You can also play the replay whenever you like during the next week.

In the first hour, it's songs with blue in the title, from many genres. In the second hour, it's diverse bluegrass performers. Fear not, it's more than just blazing fast; you'll hear ballads and waltzes, too. Over the two hours, you'll hear Nickel Creek, Mark Cosgrove, the Light Crust Doughboys and David Bowie....and many others.

Belfast has been taken over this week (happily) by the Atlantic Challenge USA, bringing more than 125 young mariners to town for an international contest of seamanship. They are rowing and sailing 38-foot-long wooden boats that are just plain difficult to maneuver. So, crews must learn to work together. The point is not just to win (though the race committee does keep score) but also to build community and international connections through traditional maritime skills.

You know what's coming next.....this week it's Northern Latitudes: the Atlantic Challenge Edition. Two hours of songs about rowing and sailing. You'll hear -- among many others -- Owen Kennedy, the Gawler Family Band, the Harmonic Tone Revealers and Johnny Cash.

First of all, thank you so much for the outpouring of love and congratulations on Pamela Peck's and my wedding! Apparently people do read these weekly posts about my radio show.

I'm still thinking a lot about music I cannot live without, so this week it's Northern Latitudes: ALBUMS That Mean the World to Me. Mostly, I'll play three tracks from each album. Some are youthful nostalgia, but others are more recent, well, relatively anyway.

Which albums mean the world to you? Comment below.....please!

Among others, you'll from Annie Lennox (Bare), Bonnie Raitt (Nick of Time), Jackson Browne (Running on Empty) and Stevie Wonder (Innervisions).

Well, it's true; we got married! It happened on Friday rather than Saturday due to the marine forecast: we had sun and wind, then fog, then sun....it was lovely.

This week it's Northern Latitudes: Music That Means the World To Me Edition. You'll hear songs and artists that I simply cannot live without. There will be anecdotes about why, and a couple of direct connections to the music. Among many others, you'll hear Blood, Sweat & Tears, Doc Cheatham & Nicholas Payton, Paul Simon and the Trio Album by Linda Rondstadt, Emmylou Harris & Dolly Parton.

Saddle up, Pardner, we're hitting the trail with two hours of Western Swing & Cowboy music this week on Northern Latitudes. Not quite sure whether you like Western Swing? Well, then, you'd best give this show a listen, Buckaroo/Buckarette.

You'll hear -- among many others -- Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel, the DeZurik Sisters, Patsy Montana and the inventor of it all Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys.

OK kids, so the weather is hot....beastly hot (though not intolerable here in Midcoast Maine). You might think I would reach for the obvious easy theme ......... and you would be right. This week, it's Northern Latitudes: the Hot Summer Edition.

I must admit that I worried a bit the show might be just a cliche, but once I played through the tracks, I decided that it's a good. So please, take a listen. You'll hear -- among many others -- Booker T & the MGs, George Strait, Jimmy McGriff, Olivia Newton-John and Seals & Crofts.

I am two weeks into stripping old varnish and applying fresh varnish to my Whitehall gig.....8 coats of new varnish! This process includes -- with each coat -- sand, vacuum, tack cloth and apply new varnish with extreme care. It's tedious, but it's worth it to protect the boat, and to elicit oooooohs and ahhhhhhs of bystanders. See photo below for how she looks with just two coats.

So, any guesses about the theme this week? That's right, it's Northern Latitudes: the Boat Edition. You'll hear guitarist Caetano Veloso, Every Mother's Son, the Hues Corporation and Maine fiddlers Owen Kennedy, among many others of course.

It's a two-for-one deal this week on Northern Latitudes. During Hour #1 it's all singer-songwriters performing songs with numbers in the title. In Hour #2 we'll be singin' the blues and ridin' trains. Join me on Northern Latitudes: the Numbers Edition.......and the Blues-on-the-Train Edition!

Among many others, you'll hear Ani DiFranco, Delbert McClinton, Suzanne Vega and Bluesman Carey Bell. What a deal, two-for-one themes and -- as always -- double your money back if not completely satisfied. Where else, but on Belfast Community Radio?!

My fiance, Pamela Peck, suggested a theme and it's a good one. In fact, it's so good I'll be able to make at least two two-hour shows. Listen in this week to Northern Latitudes: the Dream Edition.

You'll hear a bit more pop music than usual, but still quite a variety, from spoken poetry by Langston Hughes to big band jazz, to old-time and folk. Pictured below are Cass Elliott, Davy Jones, Fleetwood Mac and Gary Wright.

It's a week of contrast on Northern Latitudes as we spend the first hour playing sad and the second playing happy songs. It's Northern Latitudes: the Hour of Laments & Happy Hour Edition!

Let me give you two reasons to tune in. First of all, laments have gorgeous melodies and lush chords. You'll be enjoying the music so much you'll hardly notice the sad themes. Second, after an hour of laments, songs of pure happiness will put a big fat smile on your face and a spring in your step.

Among many others, you'll hear Creedence Clearwater Revival, Alan Epstein & Jim Prendergast playing a lament for Scotsman Hector MacDonald (in uniform below), the jazz supergroup of Oscar Peterson, Milt Jackson & Ray Brown, plus a duet of Tobey Keith & Sting. [Where else but on Belfast Community Radio are you going to find that range of talent in one show?!]

This week it's Northern Latitudes: the Red Edition......for no good reason other than I wondered how many songs have the word red in the title. Turns out there are about six hours to choose from. Of course, I boiled it down to two hours for your listening pleasure.

Among many others, you'll hear Katie Webster, Malvina Reynolds, Prince, Smiley Lewis and The Who. Where else but on community radio are you going to hear such a range of performers?

Northern Latitudes airs for two hours on WBFY 100.9 LP in Belfast Maine: Saturday 2p, Sunday 6a and Tuesday 1p.

The theme this week is that there is no theme. Welcome to Northern Latitudes: the Potluck Edition. We will travel around the world and dig through the record bins of many genres. While I enjoy the challenge of a theme, I love the freedom to play whatever moves me.

You'll hear from -- among many others -- cowboy singer Dave Stamey, Midcoast Mainer Elsie Gawler, bluesman Leadbelly, guitarist Mark Cosgrove and Nina Simone.

Unlike in Lake Woebegon, it's been a rough couple of weeks in my world: I had bronchitis that developed into pneumonia. No fun.

So, this week, we go low then we go high. First up, it's Northern Latitudes: the Pneumonia Hour. Happily in hour #2 it's the Feeling Good Again Hour. Among many others, you'll hear more renditions of a certain song than anyone should hear in a lifetime. [Pneumonia kinda feels like that.] I'll also play Annie Lennox, Huey "Piano" Smith & the clowns, Mance Lipscomb, Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris.
