"Walden" by Claudia Brown, Chief Adviser of Owl Magazine

I will miss my trail walks with Walden, who was taken in by All Shepherd Rescue this morning. The woods in summer were a beautiful backdrop to his gleaming black fur, muscular frame, shining golden brown eyes and triangular ears.

On a good walk, he stayed with me and came when I called. And I thought that maybe I could make it work - despite his high energy, intensity and strength.

But in the more challenging moments - when he would charge me, knock me down, bite large holes in my clothing, tear off my pants, and scratch and nip with sharp nails and teeth - I realized I was no match for this dog.

But I didn't give up without a fight. I spent hours researching his breed - identified as a mix of German Shepherd, Sable Shepherd and Belgian Malanois. (I had originally been told he was a Retriever mix.)

I hired trainers who advised everything from hand feeding to electric shock collars.

It just didn't seem right that a dog I tried so hard to find would be the only animal I would ever give up.

Since childhood, most of my pets had been strays, serendipitously crossing my path. I would find them everywhere: under a house porch, on a moonlight city street, and once inside a school building. And yet Walden was carefully chosen from hundreds and hundreds of available dogs for adoption listed on various rescue web sites.

Still in mourning for my last dog, Eli, who had died suddenly and prematurely from aggressive cancer, I found Walden on a rescue site promoting a large-scale adoption event. I saw soul and wisdom in the eyes of an eight-week-old pup then named "Greg."

I made the hour-long trek to Columbia, Maryland with nine-year-old Tacy, leaving our home a little after 6 AM to draw a number and then wait in line for the event scheduled to start at noon.

When the gates opened, the hundreds of potential adoptees rushed in to see the pups while Tacy and I split up looking for "Greg," the dark "Retriever mix" with soulful eyes. What a thrill when I found him, holding him high and calling to Tacy, "I found Greg!"

It was such a joyful moment that never would I have dreamt that ten months later I would be giving him up.

However, my months with Walden have shown me there is a time to let go, and there can be grace in the process.

Thanks to the volunteer work of All Shepherd Rescue, I know a better home awaits where Walden will receive the training that he needs and where he will be appreciated and not feared.

There is beauty in acceptance, and I am grateful for what I have learned from our time together.

Tacy asks about another dog and while I have told her not until next summer, I remain open - but only if one crosses my path.
