Just another few moments from a vocal production session

11/17/2021

I see vocal production as a collaboration between the artist and the producer.

11/17/2021

Some of my go-to techniques for getting better vocal takes.

11/13/2021

To my ear, scoops are an important part of
how the vocalist communicates intensity and passion. They’re worth paying attention to and tuning with just as much care and choice as the rest of the vocal. But scoops might not be worth take after take of recording. Asking the singer to take care to sing their scoops in tune may take their focus off of their most important job: singing their part with as much emotion and energy as possible.

Sometimes it helps to just shake out of the comfort zone, and then reel it back in.

Each note you tune must serve the song.

A video about what goes into a gentle edit with the goal of transparency

Just another clip from a vocal production session.

11/03/2021

In this session we realized the singer was singing based on what the production might end up sounding like and not what served the lyric.

It always helps to have a reminder.

Had a vocal session that I thought had a cool moment in it.

This is the first piece of advice I give to anyone thinking about music as a career

10/26/2021

There’s plenty of creativity in the editing process.

From a real vocal production session.

Recording better takes starts with how you actively listen in the studio. This video is about a pretty simple concept I call balanced listening. It’s technique to practice and there’s a trick to it that I share at the end. Enjoy!

I’d rather be looking at ‘em than looking for ‘em.

I recently had a session where the singer wanted me to talk a little bit about my vocal production process before we got started. I recorded my side of the conversation and I thought there were a few moments of value that I wanted to share.
