2023 Artifacts of Brutality Brutal Death Metal Top 20 recap: (this list only includes full length and EP releases)
Every year this list gets harder, I guess that’s a good thing for the scene. I usually start with about 50-60 releases that are my top choices and then try to get it down to the final 20. Unfortunately there are allot of great releases that don’t show up on the AOB AOY list, but I’m sure many others will pop up on other publications end of the year lists. The 2022 AOY list was dominated by Comatose Music, but 2023 belonged to Dan Osborn and New Standard Elite. I’m not sure I can recall a year where one extreme metal label put out so many amazing albums (seven made the list this year and a few others were very close as well). If this was Dan’s plan…to go out with a bang…then he definitely accomplished that. Another thing I have noticed this year is the number of outstanding younger bands that are gaining traction in this genre. Bands like: Nuclear Remains, Regurgitated Entrails, Desecation, Virologist, and Scaphism to name a few. I don’t think the BDM scene has been in a better place in quite some time. I am very much looking forward to 2024 and beyond.
Thank you to anyone who has purchased and read this magazine, without your support I would not be doing this. Miguel, Risham, and I are currently working on Issue 3, it will be out soon. I hope everyone has a great new year and a prosperous 2024….

Issue 3 is now being created, I wanted to give everyone a sample of what will be featured in the new issue, a few of the interviews will be:

Many of you already know that I’m running New Standard Elite Records now as well, but Artifacts of Brutality will remain completely separate. Obviously you will see a few NSE bands covered in each issue, NSE has always been my favorite BDM label and I love the bands on this label but as a huge fan of this scene some of my favorite bands are not on NSE, those bands will always get the exposure and coverage they deserve by Artifacts of Brutality Magazine.

Gored in the Heart of Texas- Day 3 (9/23/23)…well that’s a wrap, amazing fest from start to finish but this day was stacked: Condemned, Immortal Suffering, Putrid Stu, Desecation, Excresence, just to name a few. Thickneck Taylor and crew did a great job organizing this fest…looking forward to next year. Day 2: Gored in the Heart of Texas (9/22/23). Highlights for me were the extremely underrated but overly impressive Defiled Crypt and Architectural Genocide. Reviled, still killing it as a three piece this weekend. The C**k and Ball Torture inspired Grindcore extravaganza of Deflowered. The reemergence of Extremely Rotten, playing many songs from their 2013 masterpiece: Grotesque Acts of Humanity. And of course ending the night with the legendary Pyrexia (no explanation needed. But following in the trend from yesterday, the day went to the young men from Nuclear Remains, Just an outstanding, professional, and powerful set. I’m excited for the future of the BDM scene with so many young., talented, up and coming bands. These guys by far are towards the top of that list. Day 1 of Gored in the Heart of Texas is in the books, great catching up with old friends and thank you to everyone who stopped by the NSE and Artifacts table. Great sets by the always impressive Scaphism, Grieve, and Kill Everything…but the day went to Regurgitated Entrails…the young men from Southern California crushed, the Brutal Death Metal youth movement is in full effect.
