Why Beaufort NC

Why Beaufort NC We all chose Beaufort, NC for different reasons. Why do we choose Beaufort, NC? This is Why! Follow the adventures of Greg Moss as I explore the Crystal Coast.

Based in Beaufort, NC, America's Coolest Small Town, this will give you insight into life here!

It is rare that I see the horses of Beaufort standing in a perfect row like this. They were hanging out the water across from the Hill St, Gerald St, Seaview St area. It was kind of comical, them just wading through the water, but they probably look at humans going to the beach or pool and think the same thing...they are just cooling off!

I don't mind working on a Sunday, especially when I have a hard working co-worker to tag along with me, see the sights, and help me out!

Today has been one of those catch all days, a little real estate work, a little bike rental work, a little around the house work, but when you have a helper, it makes it a lot more fun!

A couple of days ago my 13 year old, Gabe, asked if there was any work he could do to make a little extra spending money for our upcoming trip. Sure! And one of the things I love about him is when he works, he works. Plus, his back is a lot younger than mine and he is a little lower to the ground, so for some of those tasks I, as the old man, have to be careful about, he can perform with ease!

We headed over to the Beaufort Hotel to swap out some bike racks that had gotten rusty with some new ones ( Beaufort Bike Rental is going to a major refurbishment/update on a lot of our hardware...making things look pretty again!), and he was the perfect guy to undo and re-attach the nuts and washers that hold the racks into the concrete.

We left there and headed down Front Street to the office to grab a couple of things, then back down Front St to our next stop. We had a lot of fun looking at the sights in our favorite town in the whole wide world; a trio of horses cooling off in the water, a trio of tikibar boats likely cooling off with a different liquid, pirate ships, busy shops, beautiful houses, and tunnels of trees. It is so much fun to experience Beaufort with your kids!

We headed up Live Oak to grab a quick Burger King lunch (his choice...when I asked him what he wanted for a 'working lunch' his first response was Beaufort Hotel!...I had to remind him that we just had a fancy dinner at Blue Heron the other day and that we would be eating out a lot on the trip, so fast food was more along our speed today than 34 North was!). No surprise, he went with chicken nuggets, fries, and a blue icee, and I went with a double Whopper Jr, no onions, lite Mayo. Sometimes a flame cooked Whopper just hits the spot!

While we were waiting for our food we have fun moving our heads back and forth looking at the Fiddler on the Roof sign in the fore ground with thr Piggly Wiggly sign in the background. We decided our favorite was 'Piggfiddlerly', beating out 'Piggly Fiddler' and 'Fiddler Wiggly'!

Next stop was to do some work in the storage unit I keep in case a hurricane comes by and I have to put the bicycles somewhere safe...Lord knows our pitiful little garage can't hold 40 bikes! No matter what task I gave him, he hopped to it. I am so delighted that the lessons of hard work have rubbed off on my boys. Would he rather be at home playing a video game, sure, but he knows if he wants some extra spending money, he has to earn it!

Our final stop was dropping off some things at Loaves and Fishes, and then we headed home. I absolutely love days like this...a little family, a little work, a little fun, a little sight seeing, and little good food, and a couple of good lessons for your kids. It doesn't get much better than this!

The other evening we had the pleasure of dining at Blue Heron Restaurant in The Beaufort Club, and it was absolutely fantastic, as always! It was just 3/4 of the Why Beaufort NC crew; Isaac was off seeing the Elysian Players production of Fiddler on the Roof with his friends, so Gabe, Amanda, and I decided on having a nice dinner, just the three of us!

It had been raining and storming all day, so I dropped Amanda and Gabe off at the curb, then parked and went in under the umbrella. Beaufort Club is such a photogenic place, but much more so on a sunny day than on a rainy one like this!

The Beaufort Club facility and Club house is beautiful, and the Blue Heron Restaurant is tucked back in the back. You do not have to be a member to enjoy it, but I do recommend reservations, especially for Friday and Saturday nights. We often grab lunch there...they have a very nice lunch service, but dinners there are a special treat.

We got in and got our table, and I am glad that we reserved, because the place was pretty full. Our server, Prissy, did a wonderful job, and it is funny, I had planned on getting their Friday Night Prime Rib special (they have FANTASTIC prime rib...thick cut and perfectly cooked), until she went though the other specials...more on what I got in a minute.

For dinners they bring out wonderful fresh baked bread, which we all enjoyed, and I got a bowl of their delicious clam chowder as a starter.

While we were waiting for our dinner, we kept with a family dining out tradition and broke out the Uno cards...we started this when the boys were young, and have continued it to this day. It was a hotly contested game with multiple 'Unos' being called, a lot of strategic draw 2s, draw 4 wilds, and some maniacal skips and reverses, and no one actually won before the food came (I was THIS close a couple of times!!!)

Our food came, and boy was it good. Gabe got his favorite, Chicken Fingers and fries...Beaufort Club is up there with Clawsons and No Names as some of his favorites in the area. He loves the seasoning they put on the fries, and his tenders are always perfectly cooked.

Speaking of perfectly cooked, Amanda got the filet, which was a perfectly cooked medium rare. She skipped the seasonal veggies to have a double order of mashed potatoes (I have tried to get her to eat more veggies like me, reminding her that good food is cheaper than good medicine, but that is a conversation for another day, lol!). She absolutely enjoyed her her meal!

I was, in my mind at least, the winner winner seafood dinner of the night. Their other special (in addition to the prime rib), was a fabulous seafood option; blackened red snapper and pan seared scallops, served over grits with sautéed tomatoes, onions, peppers, and mushrooms with a cream sauce. I tell you, the complexity of flavors was outstanding, and the way that they all worked together just hit the spot like you wouldn't believe. It was an absolute pleasure to join the clean plate club that evening!

As we waited for our food, I stepped out onto the back patio a couple of times to try to get a decent sunset picture. I love the sunsets in Beaufort Club...they are often phenomenal! The sun was doing it's darnedest to unsuccessfully bust through the clouds, but try as it might, the cloud cover was just too thick to pe*****te. But don't worry, as the song says, the sun will come out tomorrow!

We had a wonderful evening of fine dining and fun company, and left with full bellies! Make sure when you are there you spend a few minutes enjoying and appreciating the art...they currently have a great collection of paintings from Quin T Dionne that is well worth taking a good look at! Beautiful!

Hmmm...I wonder what we are getting into today! The biggest downside with pickling things is the delayed gratification, but sometimes good things are worth waiting for!

I am not the best canner in the world...my grandparents and great grandparents did a lot more canning than my parents did, but it is a skill I am slowly trying to learn.

We are doing these as 'cold packed' pickles, where instead of boiling the jars, packing them, and storing them in the cupboard we are storing them in the fridge...they don't last as long but they will get eaten pretty darn quick once they are ready!

Normally we get pickling cucumbers from my wife's grandfather, but at 92 years old he just isn't doing as big of a garden as he used to (though we have offered him a dozen times to help him with it, I am kind of glad he didn't do it this year, with this weather!). A client of mine had too many cucumbers, so when she offered us some, I accepted! Can't wait to try them when they are done!

While seagulls are by no means my favorite bird in the world, they sure are fun to watch sometimes, especially when they are fighting over roosting spots or a fish.

Today I have been down at a property in Straits that has a dock going south in the aptly named body of water called Straits. The gulls were cracking me up...I swear a couple of them must be brothers as similar as they looked, one was perfectly perching on one leg, and one got a nice size shrimp that he was struggling to eat.

It always amazes me the diversity of the coloring and patterns, and while they can be noisy and messy, they are part of life here at the coast. Sometimes hearing them calling and cackling back and forth just puts you in the beach mindset.

But don't feed them...they can take well enough care of themselves without French fries, lol!

It's raining, it's pouring, and boy, I wish I was at home snoring! But instead of going to bed or bumping my head, I am out working Down East and getting a full belly at Seaside General Store and Restaurant on Harkers Island!

The day has taken me from Havelock to Harkers Island, and most places in between, and by the time Arlene and I had wrapped up our meetings we were hungry! We were in Straits, just across the water from Harkers Island, so we decided to run across the bridge to get some comfort food from the first gas station on the left after you cross the bridge.

For the uninitiated, some of the best food spots in our area are the grills and restaurants attached to gast stations. It always gives me a thrill to take clients new to the area by places like this, and they initially turn up their noses, but then once they have had the best shrimp burger, fried chicken, slice of pizza, etc in their life, they learn the age old lesson of not judging a book by the cover! Luckily after a year or so of working together I have Arlene pretty well trained to know that when I recommend a place, it generally means the food is pretty darn good!

We made it in between showers, grabbed a booth, and got our drinks...Arnold Palmer for Arlene, Sweet Tea for me (they have fantastic sweet tea, and while I normally get unsweetened and save my calories for the food, after a day of playing in the rain I needed some good sweet tea!)

We placed our order; Arlene went with a hot dog and a basket of chili-cheese fries (nice to have such with someone who eats even more unhealthily than me!), and I went with an oyster burger with coleslaw.

Much like at Cracker Barrel, once you place your order you then go and wander around the general store. They were doing a bumping business on umbrellas, coffee, and X-tra Tuff boots today with it being such a mess outside, and there were quite a few folks checking things out in the store. We have gotten a lot of gifts and things there over the years, and with being so close to the fishing pier at Harkers Island Bridge you can better believe that they had quite a selection of fishing implements.

Our food arrived, and boy, was it yummy. Arlene enjoyed her hotdog, and devoured her chili-cheese fries. I felt so bad, letting her eat that whole big basket of fries on her own, so I graciously helped out by eating a few, and they were wonderful! Not something I would order for myself, but I will help a friend out!

My oyster burger was phenomenal...the oysters were well cleaned, plump, juicy, and fried to a perfect golden brown. The slaw was delicious, and it just hit the spot like you wouldn't believe. Like I said, comfort food!

Right when we were finishing up, the bottom fell out of the clouds and just POURED down rain. We decided to wander around the shop for a few more minutes, and it was like the weather Gods were saying 'Greg, you can't leave without getting some ice cream', so I listened, and got some Turtle Sunday ice cream! The cashier/ice cream scooper pointed out that it was 'NSA...No Sugar Added', and I told her that that was OK, I am sweet enough already, and with all that sweet tea it was probably a good thing that I went with the NSA version!

By the time I ate my ice cream, the rain had let off enough that I could make a run for the truck, but coming back over the Harkers Island Bridge, looking east, you couldn't even see Gloucester, much less Marshallberg or Browns Island!

It was a fun, wet day down east, but I would rather have a rainy day at the Crystal Coast than a sunny day just about anywhere else!

Friends and followers, I need your recommendations! The Why Beaufort NC crew is going on a little family road trip soon, and I want to see if you have suggestions or recommendations on things to do or see along the way:

Day 1, Beaufort, SOUTH CAROLINA: yes, we are going to visit our sister city to the south, the town with the same name but a different kind of fame, Beaufort, SC. I have never been there and I thought it would be fun to confuse everyone. Any restaurant or activity recommendations from folks who have been there before?

Day 2, Savannah, GA: while we could spend a week here, we will only be there for a day and a night. We will be having dinner at the world famous Pirate House Restaurant, but are looking for other fun activities!

Day 3 & 4, The Villages, Florida: We will be here visiting one of my favorite uncles and aunts in the world, and while they have some activities planned, I am open to 'hey Greg, y'all CAN'T miss...' kind of ideas.

Day 5 & 6, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. We are going there for a convention for the kids, one that Gabe came up with, but we will have some free time, and are open to fun restaurant and activity recommendations!

If there are any 'can't miss' stops on the way down or back we are open to those as well...we will have more free time on the way down than the way back up, but are open to anything!

Thanks in advance! Looking forward to the Clampets being on the road, even though we won't be strapping granny and her rocking chair to the roof this time!

Who let the dogs out? Black Sheep Beaufort did! And I ate them right up! For those who know me or follow along on here, I am a big fan of slaw dogs, and sometimes you just need something that hits the spot! And boy, these did!

Of course, Black Sheep is well known for their phenomenal hand made, wood fired pizzas, but on Thursdays they add something else to their already diverse menu offerings of pizzas, sandwiches, soups, salads, and mac & cheese; they add some of the best hot dogs you have ever had...they are goooooooood!

My 3rd favorite thing about Hot Dog Thursdays at Black Sheep: the walk to go down and get them. I step out of my office and take it all in. The sights: our beautiful little town, the sailboat masts behind the buildings, the cars and people going by, the beautiful structures, and the blue sky with puffy clouds. I smell the salt on the air, a whiff of coconut oil in the sunscreen of the passersby, the flowers, and the aromas of the food cooking in Beaufort's many fine restaurants. I feel the sun on my face and the breeze through my hair. I hear the seagulls calling at each other, the visitors chattering back and forth, and the sounds of a little town bustling with commerce!

I take a few steps down to the corner of Turner and Front St, wait for a few cars to pass or turn, and cross Front St to the water side. I take a moment to admire the fantastic Beaufort mural, then look across the railings to see what the waterfront has in store. I check out the boats that are in port today, look at the water to see if there are any dolphins playing in Taylor's Creek (none today, or at least not at that moment), and I look across to the island to see if there are horses out grazing (again, none at that moment, but that is ok, I know I will see them soon!)

I stroll down the boardwalk, enjoying the feel of the boards under my feet, and stop here and there to watch the wind blowing through the flags and whirlygigs at Kitty Hawk Kites, then the trees, then the flags on the flag pole...beautiful. I take a moment to marvel at the gorgeous yachts in town, knowing that unless my life changes drastically I will never own one, but that is ok, I still appreciate their size and beauty from a distance. I help a family take a couple of photos (they were trying to take a 'selfie' with five folks in it...I had to explain that their arms weren't long enough to take that photo!) and chat with them for a minute, answering what questions I could.

I always enjoy thr gorgeous flowers all over Beaufort on my little walks...between what the Beaufort Garden Club, the Beaufort Business Associaton and the private businesses all do, we certainly have a mighty fine looking town!

My 2nd favorite thing about Hot Dog Thursdays at Black Sheep: the staff. I tell you, the folks that work at Black Sheep are just fantastic! From the owner, Jeff, to the servers, to the hosts/hostesses, to the bartenders, to the food runners, they are all just so pleasant. When I went to place my order the server already had my name typed in, and was ready to place my order...she just needed to know how many dogs I was getting and how I wanted them (you can get them with a whole mess of stuff...chili, mustard, onions, slaw, etc, but I just like slaw.) As I was waiting for my dogs to be expertly prepared, I wandered next door to Beaudega in search of a cold beverage. I was hoping for a Cheerwine, but unfortunately they didn't have any, so I went with an orange cream soda! It is rare that I have a soda, but some days you just need one! I stuck my head briefly into the Green Room to say hello to Ash, and then headed back over to pick up my dogs.

My #1 favorite thing about Hot Dog Thursdays at Black Sheep: The Hot Dogs themselves! These things are absolutely fantastic! Big, meaty hot dogs, wrapped around fresh, delicious buns, with the perfect amount of homemade coleslaw on top...it doesn't get much better than this! Sometimes it is the simple pleasures in life that are best, and it doesn't get more simple or better than this!

Sushi, sunset, and Scrabble, what a way to end a wonderful day! When I picked up Isaac from marching band practice in Newport today we had a couple of errands to run, and in the course of our conversation my lunch came up. (The topic, not a visceral reaction, lol!) A couple of his friends follow me on Facebook and showed him my lunch post, and he was understandably jealous of my Front Stret Grill tuna tacos!

Amanda and Gabe are not sushi fans, so every once in a while Isaac and I stage a jailbreak and go after some raw fish, and that is exactly what we did tonight (don't worry, we picked up some Chick-fil-A for Amanda and Gabe...their favorite!)

Isaac and I finished our errands and headed over to Nami Japanese Cuisine, which is located on Arendell St near Walmart. We did what we often do when he and I go out to eat on our own; order all the things that Amanda and Gabe aren't fans of!

We started off with seaweed salad for me and ginger salad for Isaac, and he had a bowl of the clear soup. We split an order of edamame, and an order of tempora mushrooms.

For the main show, we went with a plethora of sushi, nigiri, and sashimi. Isaac had the Emerald Jade roll (unfortunately with the avocado in it I couldn't sample it, being allergic and all...stupid allergies 😞), which he loved! We had some tuna and salmon sashimi, some tuna, salmon, and yellowtail nigiri, a tuna roll, and we tried something new, a 'King Scorpion' roll, which was a fried soft shell crab in a roll. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and just delicious!

Riding home, I remarked to Isaac that it looked like we were in store for a beautiful sunset, and boy was I right! After eating so well today a little exercise was in order, and I had hoped to go on a family bike ride, but Amanda and Gabe were enjoying their Chick-fil-A, and Isaac was plum tuckered out after a day of marching in the heat, so I grabbed a bike and went chasing after the sunset, and boy, it sure was a gorgeous one!

I got home, and challenged Gabe to a game of Scrabble. I will be honest, part of me misses when I used to play against him when he had a one syllable vocabulary...as a 13 year old now I have to struggle to keep up with him on some games it didnt help that it seemed that every vowel in the tile bag was coming to me! He beats me often as not in chess, but I still whip him pretty good in quite a few games.

Final task of the night...give the cats a good brushing. I tell you, if you are ever considering getting another furball, just brush your cats...after seeing that pile of hair, you just might be cured!

What a perfect way to end a fun Crystal Coast day!

Still swimming, just like I like it. I tell you Front Street Grill at Stillwater had the best tuna tacos I have ever had in my life...I dare someone to tell me some place that has better ones!

For lunch today, I was in the mood for seafood, and we are blessed to have so many different options to choose from for great, fresh seafood. Whether you want it fried, grilled, blackened, scampied, or how I like it, still swimming, we certainly have a lot of places you can get delicious food from the sea, but today, I went with one that is always top notch, the tuna tacos from FSG.

As I wandered down Front St from my office, I passed by the wooden boat building center at the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort, and saw them working on a number of projects, so I made a note to visit while I was waiting for my food. I headed into the restaurant (which was hopping today, no surprise!), ordered my food, and spent a few minutes enjoying the view from the waterfront deck at FSG's Rhumbar at Stillwater. The view was stellar as ever, and I enjoyed a few minutes watching the boats, kayakers, paddleboarders, birds and everything happening on Taylor's Creek. It is funny, there was a boat tied up next door at Harborside Park next to the museum that had what looked like a FSG fork sitting in the boat...would be interested to hear the story of how that ended up there!

As I had planned, I wandered over to the wooden boat center and took a few minutes to admire what they were working on...so many cool things to see! I came back out onto the big deck at Harborside Park and enjoyed the fish in the water, the birds all around (three of the pigeons there reminded me of the 'Goodfeather' pigeons from the 90's cartoon show, Animaniacs!), and then headed back to pick up my lunch.

I certainly joined the Clean Take-Out Box Club today. These tacos are phenomenal...stuffed full of tuna, veggies, cheese, the flavor is spectacular! The beans and rice are so perfectly cooked, and the plantains are such a great compliment...delicious!

If you are looking for fantastic tuna tacos at the Crystal Coast, Front Street Grill is the place to go!

I love it when the clouds and sky look like the have been 'painted'! I have been running all over Carteret county today, and every time I am facing west or north west, I see these whimsical and wispy clouds that look like they were painted on a stunning azure canvas, and when I look east or south east it is gray and stormy looking. What a difference a direction makes!

07/24/2024

It wasn't noon, but I needed some Noontide Coffee & Kitchen coffee! I won't say that I am 100% set in my ways, but I do have a couple of routines I generally stick with, one of which is my morning coffee, but sometimes life gets in the way and you have to change things up.

This morning was one of those mornings. My oldest boy, Isaac has marching band camp over in Newport this week, and my amazing wife, Amanda, is usually the one who gets him up and takes him over to that. I am not a morning person. God bless me, I have many decent qualities, but getting up bright and early sure ain't one of them!

But this morning I had to take Isaac because our younger boy, Gabe, had his semi-annual dentist appointment at the WONDERFUL Beaufort Dental at the same time Isaac was needing to be dropped off over on the other side of the county. One of those divide and conquer kind of days!

I scraped myself out of bed, and only had time for 14 ounces of coffee versus my normal 28 ounces before we had to head out the door. By the time we waited for the train to go through Newport (I don't care how old you get, never outgrow the thrill of seeing a train go by!), dropped Isaac off, and headed towards Morehead City, I was ready for another belt of caffeine!

A follower in here recommended a couple of weeks ago that I swing by Noontide Coffee + Kitchen at some point to try them out, so that is where I pointed my compass today. It is located on the corner of Arendell St and Friendly Rd, next to Nick's Guns and EJW.

Usually when you walk into a coffee shop all you smell is the coffee, and sure, you smell that in Noontide, but you also smell the delicious aroma of food cooking, and after taking a look at their menu you can see why! They have a great looking selection 'brunchy' and 'lunchy' options that I will certainly have to try out at some point. The folks who were eating there when I visited looked like they were really enjoying their dishes!

I ordered my coffee, a 'red eye' with cream (no sugar...I am sweet enough already!) The coffee was perfect, and exactly what I needed. I was very impressed with the cup as well...it had a very fancy and comfortable built in sleeve!

This was a great stop to grab a jolt of caffeine before I got back into my busy day. I can't wait to try those wonderful smelling food offerings as well!

The other day I had the honor of getting to photograph the 'old Fish House' in the 2000 block of Front St. A follower on here asked me if I could share some photos of it, because when she used to visit down here it was one of her favorite spots to ride by, so here you go!

Built in 1942, it didn't always used to be where it is now. Originally on Gordon St (closer into downtown), after the war, Captain Louis Styron took it apart and floated it by barge east on Taylor's Creek and rebuilt it where it is today, down towards the east end of Front St (near the 'tree tunnel'). And here it has stood ever since.

For a while it was the family home, until his wife convinced him to build a new house for the family across Front St. Captain Styron was a working fisherman, primarily in the menhaden fishing industry, and you see evidence of that in the nets and fishing implements all around the 'old Fish House'.

His daughter, Celia Faye, has kept this amazing piece of Beaufort history up over the years, and it has become a favorite of photographers and passersby. It is a wonderful tribute to times gone by in Beaufort, and just a neat piece of our history! Thank you Celia Faye for doing what you do...you have done an amazing job keeping Beaufort's history alive!

I love it when folks on here ask me to go and photograph or visit things; I love the ideas you come up with! I am always open to suggestions of places to visit on your behalf!

07/23/2024

Mom, I am so sorry to tell you this, but my chicken and dumplings may have been better than yours! Don't get me wrong, it has been a while since I have had yours, but mine was pretty darn good tonight!

A lot of folks think that based on on my posts the Moss family only ever eats out, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Yes, we enjoy patronizing the fine eating establishments our community has to offer, but we are often just as happy to cook at home, and after a LONG weekend of working, I decided to take some home time today. And I spent quite a bit of today in the kitchen!

Now don't get me wrong, I was working while I played. Answering phone calls, arranging inspections, emailing agents and attorneys, setting appointments, etc, but sometimes you are able to do it while making biscuits.

Speaking of biscuits, that was the first thing I made today; Amanda and the boys have been asking for biscuits, so I whipped up a batch. It makes breakfasts easy during the week. And with Isaac having band camp all week, easy breakfasts are a help. I had a leftover dough, and I considered the different options, and decided to try something I had never made or even heard of before...figgy pie.

We all have heard of figgy pudding from the classic Christmas song, "now bring us some figgy pudding, now bring us some figgy pudding". But I decided to try my hand at figgy pie. I rolled out my left over dough real thin, and laid it out in a pie pan (I sprinkled a little flour in thr bottom of it so it wouldn't stick). I filled it full of figs...we have had more figs than we know what to do with this year, even after eating WAY too many and giving a bunch of them away.

I put a stick of unsalted butter, a cup or so of sugar, and a table spoon of cinnamon in a Pyrex measuring cup and melted it in the microwave, stirred it together real well, and poured it over the figs, and then baked it in the oven for about 35 minutes until the crust turned that perfect shade of brown, then pulled it out and let it cool.

It wasn't bad, but it was kind of runny, so I put it in the fridge to have after dinner and let it set up a bit.

For dinner tonight I decided to try my hand at chicken and dumplings. I had never made them before but i had seen my Mom and Grandmama make them plenty of times, so I had a rough idea.

I took 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts and put them down in the crock pot with about 6 cups of chicken broth, salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder and let them cook on high for about 6 hours. When it was done, it was so tender you could shred it just by looking at it, but I decided to use a fork.

I put two tablespoons of self rising flour down in a measuring cup with half a cup of cold water, mixed it together real well, and stirred it in to thicken up the broth, and then I made another small batch of biscuit dough (2 cups of self rising flour, 1/4 cup of bacon grease, and about 3/4 cup of milk, just enough to get it to pull away from the sides of the bowl and turn into dough...you don't want too much milk in there).

I rolled them out like normal, but instead of cutting it into circles and tossing them into the oven I cut them into strips and layed them in on top of the chicken and put the lid back on the crock pot for another half an hour.

While that was plumping up I cut some Brussel sprouts in half, melted some bacon grease down in a frying pan, put the Brussels in, and sprinkled on some salt, pepper, and curry powder, and fried them up nice.

By the time those were done the chicken and dumplings were ready. I tell you, my chicken and dumplings ranking has for the last 41 years been:

1: My Mom's
2: My Grandmama's
3: Cracker Barrel's

But after today, as much as it breaks my heart to say this, I think mine has gone to the top of the list! This was the best chicken and dumplings I have ever had, and it was so easy! Sorry Mama, and I will be happy to go head to head with you next time you come down, but these were fantastic!

We had some figgy pie for dessert, and that time in the refrigerator was exactly what it needed to conceal and develop the flavors...kind of like potato leek soup is great but after a night in the fridge it comes back even better as vichyssoise, this was even better the second go-round.

I am so blessed that I had so many great teachers who showed me the way around the kitchen, and I am so happy that my boys are taking an interest in learning how to cook as well! Sometimes after a period of hard work, it is nice just to get in the kitchen and play!
