NORTHWESTERN SEVIER...GRAINGER AND SOUTHWESTERN HAMBLEN COUNTIES THROUGH 345 PM EDT... At 257 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from near Plainview to 6 miles southwest of New Market to near Sevierville. Movement was northeast at 15 mph. HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 45 mph and pea size hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible. Locations impacted include... Morristown, Sevierville, Jefferson City, Dandridge, Rutledge, New Tazewell, White Pine, Plainview, New Market, and Strawberry Plains. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... * Tornado Warning for... Northern Jefferson County in east Tennessee... Central Grainger County in east Tennessee... Western Hamblen County in east Tennessee...

* Until 530 PM EDT.

* At 448 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Plainview, or 9 miles southeast of Maynardville, moving east at 25 mph. HAZARD...Tornado and half dollar size hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated rotation. IMPACT...Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely.

* This dangerous storm will be near... New Market around 505 PM EDT. Jefferson City around 510 PM EDT. Morristown around 520 PM EDT. IMPACT...Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely.

Other locations impacted by this tornadic thunderstorm include Cumberland Gap and Ewing.

MORRISTOWN GRADUATION CEREMONIES

Today is the last full day of school for Hamblen County students; for seniors and their families that means graduation. The Hamblen County School System utilizes the Walters State Great Smoky Mountains Expo Center for both graduations; being held Thursday, May 16, 2024.

A multi-agency K-9 Unit will conduct a safety sweep before each graduation ceremony. Once the safety sweep is completed, the doors will open for attendees. Morristown-Hamblen West High will graduate first; doors open at 2:30pm for the 4:00pm ceremony. After the Morristown-Hamblen West High graduation all exiting traffic from parking lot 1 will exit eastbound on Agricultural Park Boulevard onto US Hwy 25E northbound only. Vehicles exiting from parking lot 2, will be directed out onto Witt Road towards Progress Parkway only.

Morristown-Hamblen East High’s graduation ceremony will begin at 8:30pm; doors will open at 7:00pm for attendees. Those attending Morristown- Hamblen East High graduation, who do not have an authorized parking pass, will not be permitted to enter from Progress Parkway, Witt Road or Agricultural Park Boulevard prior to 7:00pm. East High graduates driving to the ceremony should have an identifying student card or paper on their dashboard; this will identify them as graduates and they will be directed by officers where to park beginning at 7:00pm.

The traffic pattern to get into graduation will be as follows, Morristown Hamblen-East’s graduation will enter from southbound 25E only. There will be message boards directing drivers; traffic for the graduation will need to stay in the right lane. Witt Road will be closed for incoming traffic to the Expo Center. Anyone, other than those authorized, attempting to arrive earlier than 7:00pm, for East High graduation, will be diverted southbound on 25E. Diverted traffic will not be allowed to stop, stand, or congest traffic on 25E prior to entry.

The Morristown Police Department, Hamblen County Sherriff’s Department, Tennessee Highway Patrol, White Pine City Police Department, Jefferson County Sherriff’s Department, Jefferson County Rescue Squad and Hamblen and Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency will be conducting traffic control for the ceremonies.

Following the Morristown-Hamblen East graduation, all exiting traffic may exit either towards Progress Parkway or Agricultural Park Boulevard.

The Morristown Police Department encourages all citizens to be careful Thursday in the area of Walters State Great Smoky Mountains Expo Center, and as always, remove any and all distractions to keep families safe during this special time.
