❗️***WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IS CANCELLED, BUT STILL REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE MOUNTAINS OF TENNESSEE***❗️

A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect for the counties of Grainger, Hamblen, Knox, Jefferson, and the non-mountainous portions of Cocke, Blount, and Sevier.

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?? Sciency explanation:
Linear showers are producing quick accumulations over isolated areas being impacted under these snow bands. It's very likely while driving you'll experience dry and cloudy/sunny conditions, and all of a sudden you'll encounter covered roads and snow showers. It's very similar to how Lake Effect snow works. The strong cold front working it's way in is squeezing out the rest of the moisture we had yesterday. Because of the much colder air, the snow will be drier and more fluffy, and thus easier to blow around in the wind.

Early in the day these bands can have a more linear shape and as we move into the afternoon hours, they'll become more cellular like little showers we'll see in spring or summer. Very difficult to pin-point exact amounts and the locations the bands will impact. Forecast models even struggle to handle this.

..Additional Light Snow Accumulation Possible Late Tonight and
Thursday Morning...

Another storm system will move across the region late tonight and
Thursday morning bringing with it scattered snow showers.
Additional snow accumulations of 1/2 inch are expected, possibly
locally higher across the Plateau counties. Also, the melting snow
will refreeze tonight as very cold air moves into the region.
Patchy areas of black ice are expected.

Some slick travel conditions are possible, especially during the
morning commute Thursday. If traveling, allow extra time to reach
your destination. Keep extra space between you and other
vehicles. Drive with caution and slow down.
