Battle Creek Lakeview captured a rare regional volleyball championship by outscoring SMAC foe Portage Northern 25-19, 25-15, 22-25, 25-19 in the MHSAA Division 1 Regional Final at Thornapple Kellogg High School in Middleville Thursday. The Spartans will head to the Don Johnson Fieldhouse in Lansing to face Fenton in the state quarterfinals Tuesday, Nov. 19.

Lakeview hadn’t won a district title since 2013 before back-to-back titles in 2021 and 2022, but then fell in its opening match of the 2023 postseason.

That wasn’t the plan, and winning Thursday didn’t go quite as planned either. All of a sudden a team powered largely by eight seniors had four-year varsity senior Anya Rankin, senior all-state hitter Livi Overbeek and their teammates looking to fire attacks down on sets put up by junior Madeleine Thawnghmung. Thwanghmung, a setter for her club team and on the Lakeview JV the past two seasons, was suddenly thrust onto the court when senior setter Caitlyn Miller was injured chasing a ball into the Lakeview student-section midway through the opening set against the Huskies.

Lakeview barely missed a beat and now the Spartans are one win from playing at Kellogg Arena in the state semifinals. The Spartans won a state championship in Class B in 1982 and finished as the state runner-up in 1984, but haven’t been to the state’s volleyball final four since it made its regular home in Kellogg Arena beginning in the fall of 2007.

3rd-ranked Harper Creek to host Div. 2 volleyball regional final on Thursday

After a slow start in its regional semifinal which saw the team drop the first set versus Niles on Tuesday evening, the Harper Creek High School volleyball team came back to win three straight to advance to Thursday evening’s Div. 2 regional final where they will host Three Rivers at 6 p.m.
After Niles took the first set 25-21, the Beavers won the next three by scores of 25-19, 25-13 and 25-17.
Cassidy Pratley led the team with 22 kills, while Camille Robinson had 15. Ella Chantrenne had 12 kills and Krista Brannen had eight kills. Taegen Anderson led Harper Creek with 49 assists. Addison Woodruff had 27 digs and Chantrenne had 19 digs.

Lakeview advances to volleyball regional final

The Battle Creek Lakeview varsity volleyball team took a 26-24, 25-17, 22-25, 25-17 win over Byron Center in the MHSAA Division 1 Regional Semifinal at Thornapple Kellogg High School in Middleville Tuesday. The win puts the Spartans in the regional final back in Middleville Thursday versus Portage Northern.
Lakeview is a team primarily powered by eight seniors. The Spartans won back-to-back district championships in 2021 and 2022, but the 2023 team was taken down by Harper Creek in the first match of the postseason.
Senior setter Caitlyn Miller didn’t even get to play in that one postseason match last fall, as she missed her whole junior season with an injury. She said she learned what she could from the new perspective of the court from the sideline last year. She did a great job of spreading the Spartan attack around Tuesday night in her team’s win over the Byron Center Bulldogs - a team that entered the state postseason listed among the honorable mention ranks in Division 1. Lakeview had three girls with double-digit kills.
Miller had 41 assists in the victory. Senior Anya Rankin led the Spartans in kills with 13 and had 18 digs. Senior Livi Overbeek had 11 kills and 14 digs, and senior Carson Howard had ten kills.
The Spartans had to have some variety in the attack to keep the ball away from the Bulldogs’ stand-out sophomore libero Mallory Johnson, and Howard on the block and senior libero Camille Oxley hustling all across the court were key in limiting the big swings of Bulldog senior outside hitter Reese Lowe as much as possible. Oxley finished with a team-high 21 digs.
