The term “toxic masculinity” has gained traction in recent years, but what does it actually mean?

Formally, “toxic masculinity” refers to cultural norms around male behavior that emphasize dominance, suppression of emotions, and aggression as signs of strength, often to the detriment of men’s mental and emotional health.

But let’s break this down further:

Masculinity itself isn’t toxic. The issue arises when masculine traits, like strength and assertiveness, are taken to the extreme. When we over-identify with these traits and reject vulnerability or balance, it leads to harm - both to ourselves and to those around us.

In my conversation, Dr. Su Lee and I discuss how masculinity, when balanced and channeled healthily, is a powerful and positive force. A man who is grounded in his authentic masculine energy is a beacon of strength and leadership, not just for himself, but for everyone in his life.

Consider this: How can we support men in embracing healthy masculinity? What can we do to foster a culture where masculine energy is balanced, respected, and used for the greater good?

Hello Outliers

It’s important to do some form of meditation consistently. My preferred method is contemplative meditations (of course).

If any one person benefits from the sharing of my journal entries, speak up and I’ll continue doing so routinely.

There are many tools and forms of introspection. The key isn’t in what you choose but in mastering whatever it is. That only comes from ‘doing’ what you ‘know of’ in order to truly ‘know.’
