UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD'S FIRST BLACK WOMAN TRAIN ENGINEER
Edwina Justus (July 11, 1943) is a African-American trailblazer engineer who is best known for being Union Pacific's first black female train engineer.

At a young age, Edwina's role as a change-maker began when she became the first African-American girl to attend Brown Park School, and she was the only person of color in the entire school.

In search of better opportunities, Edwina applied for a job at Union Pacific. After her application was denied, she enrolled at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

When she applied at Union Pacific for the second time, her application was a success. Justus began her career at U.P. in 1973 as a clerk at one of its Omaha facilities. Edwina Justus was one of five black women who worked in the Omaha office.

In 1976 she applied for an engineer opening in North Platte, Neb. She got the job and became UP’s first black female engineer at the age of 34. North Platte was a big operation. Union Pacific is the largest railroad in the United States. “When I received the offer in North Platte, Nebraska, my dad encouraged me to take it.”

However, the work environment wasn't supportive. Edwina endured racial slurs and the belief that she couldn't do good work as a woman. But she was not deterred. She used her wit and performance to excel in her career.

Justus worked 22 years before retiring in 1998. She hauled items such as livestock, automobiles and airplane wings to Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Denver, Colorado, never taking for granted the beauty of a sunset or quiet night.

“Railroading isn’t easy, but I didn’t let anyone bully me and I always stood up for myself,” Justus said.

In 2018, Justus was honored in a Durham Museum exhibit. The exhibit shares the diverse experiences of 12 Nebraska women through time.

The internet created a whole new world of digital possibilities. Emmit McHenry created the internet.

Emmitt McHenry was born a preacher’s grandson in Forrest City, Arkansas in 1943. Growing up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, McHenry graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and went on to receive his B.S. in communications from the University of Denver in 1966. He soon after enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he attained the rank of lieutenant.

Upon graduating with his M.S. in communications from Northwestern University, McHenry and a few associates started an engineering company called Network Solutions. 16 years into their successful venture, they were awarded a contract with the U.S. Government that would turn their company into a legacy.

After the government received and reviewed several proposals, Network Solutions was granted the contract with the National Science Foundation to create and manage the world’s first domain name registration service. Back then, the internet’s commercial potential hadn’t yet been realized. It wasn’t until Emmit McHenry created a complex code which allowed any person the ability to search the internet and use email services without having to have studied and be knowledgeable in computer programming. McHenry did the work for us, officially creating what we now know as the .com, .net, .edu, and .gov – allowing us to communicate through the internet.

McHenry is an inventor, an engineer, an entrepreneur, a veteran, and a trailblazer. His honors include an Honorary Doctorate from Shaw University, the Marine Corps Sunset Parade Guest of Honor, and the Chairman’s Award from the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Foundation. He remains the Founder, Chairman, and CEO of NetCom Solutions International, Inc., – and Chairman of Archura, LLC, co-founded by his son.

An Excerpt of Phenomenal Lover ... Anniversary Gifts

Whether you are in the first days of marriage or have already experienced a rich life together, it is important to celebrate milestones. Each year is linked with a gift idea. Below I will provide examples for anniversary gifts by year and briefly explain why each object represents the passage of varying amounts of time. Traditional gifts became a symbolic metaphor to mark the years. As time passed, the gifts associated with each anniversary evolved alongside society. Modern gift ideas reflect items that have become more popular for couples today. Some of them offer practical alternatives to luxury items.
