Pope School students helping Steve Azar sing the State Song of Mississippi today at the grand opening of The Oaks at Sherin Farms. The Pope kids did a great job, and always good to have Steve around.
Here is a short video of Marie leaving the station with cold, but happy, passengers.
John Nelson has the only operational steam engine in Mississippi & Panola County residents who have ridden the short rails are thrilled with the experience. He made a few runs on a cold morning Saturday to the delight of adults and children alike. We took a few videos, hope you enjoy and share. The last video of the new trestle isn't very good, but it's clear enough to see it was a remarkable project that Mr. John completed. Someone suggested the same trestle, if built by government in a highway project, would have cost several hundred thousand dollars. Mr. John used salvaged channel steel and white oak sawed at his steam mill. The last photo shows the trestle under construction. Thank you, John Nelson, for keeping railroad history alive, and for allowing Panola County to share in the experience.
Kudos to the South Panola School District transportation team for an amazing job navigating around the ongoing sewer rehab project on Booth Street. Each morning this week between 7:15 and 7:25 the bus drivers have done an awesome job of squeezing through the tight sections of Bruce and Pollard Streets to bypass Booth. So far, all mailboxes are still standing and no mirrors have been knocked off! And no buses have swapped paint! Great job, bus drivers! The afternoon routes aren't nearly as congested because schools have staggered dismissals, but the morning route is something to see. A school bus is not easy to drive in the best of situations, and these SPSD drivers are showing skills this week. Enjoy the video and give a bus driver a high five today.
Family Fun on the Batesville Square

Tonight will be the final Square Concert of the year so take the family and enjoy a cool, crisp Batesville evening. Come hungry, a taco food truck is on the way!
Sea of Blue honors Officer Courtney Pride
Law enforcement from multiple agencies joined the Panola County Sheriff's Office in a Sea of Blue procession through Batesville tonight. The Square Concert Series was paused as family and friends of MDOT Officer Courtney Pride were followed by police cars and trucks through downtown. Pride was killed in an automobile accident in Tunica County last Saturday.
Mayor Hal Ferrell and the Batesville Board of Aldermen were administered the oaths of office this morning by Circuit Court Judge Smith Murphey at the Muncipal Courtroom.
