LOVING MISSISSIPPI !!!

This week’s update from under the capitol dome.

The House convened at 2:00 PM on Monday, beginning with a moment of recognition to honor the life and service of Officer Troy Floyd of the Summit Police Department in Lincoln County. A resolution was adopted to commemorate his passing.

Members also recognized the Jackson State University football team for securing the 2024 HBCU national championship.

The House engaged in a busy week of legislative activity, advancing numerous bills ahead of critical deadlines. Several measures have now been sent to the Senate for further consideration.

HB 74, passed 110-5, would allow the transportation commission to increase the speed limits on four lane state highways and interstate highways by five miles per hour.

HB 849, passed 76-33, permits Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) to practice independently after completing 8,000 clinical hours, eliminating the requirement for physician collaboration. The bill also establishes licensure for the Anesthesiologist Assistants under physician collaboration. The bill modifies the composition of the Mississippi Board of Nursing.

HB 1432, passed 60-49, expands charter school eligibility in certain districts, allows contract amendments for mergers without school closures, and prohibits authorizers from retaining per-pupil funding. Additionally, it enhances oversight, updates enrollment and accountability regulations, and grants school a two-year deferral for opening if necessary.

HB 928, passed 118-0, mandates that hospitals with emergency departments have personnel available at all times to conduct forensic examinations for sexual assault victims and maintain an adequate supply of evidence collection kits. It also requires proper storage of these kits in designated refrigeration units and permits hospitals to contract forensic nurses for examinations.

Unfortunately there are too many bills to list all of them. If there is a certain bill you have a question or concerns about, please reach out to me.

Thursdays, February 13, marked the deadline for original floor action on general bills and constitutional amendments originating in the House.

Looking ahead, the next major deadline is Monday, February 26, for original floor action on Appropriation and Revenue Bills originating in own house.

FYI

Due to the increased number of flu cases we have had today, we have made the decision to close grades K5-5th for two days, Tuesday, February 11th & Wednesday, February 12th.

Despite our ongoing efforts to avoid this, the number of cases has reached a point that requires us to take extra precautions for the safety of our students and faculty. This will allow us to disinfect areas thoroughly, and hopefully decrease the spread of the virus.
We will be closely monitoring our K3 & K4 classes, as well as our middle school and high school classes, but as of now, their numbers have not reached a point to need these measures.

Please encourage your children to be very vigilant with healthy habits such as washing hands, covering mouth and nose for sneezing and coughing, and staying home when not feeling well.

We apologize for this inconvenience, but we hope this will lessen the spread of all viruses circulating at this time.
Thank you for your patience as we try to keep all our students and staff safe!

Edited to add: We are glad we could make people laugh with our wanted poster, but please do not honk at the emu. She is scared and the owners have got a team helping them to get her back home safe. If you spot her please notify us. We will get in touch with the owners.

Please be on the lookout for the following suspect. Last spotted on Hwy 6 near the Co-Op and the Hyundai dealership. Use caution if traveling in this area.

In all seriousness though, please do not attempt to wrangle this animal. It does have an owner and they are on horses trying to safely capture this animal.
