New year, old scam - Polk Countians beware the Jury Duty Scam has reared its ugly head again. The most recent scam artist used the real name of one of our deputies. Here's how the scam works, and why people fall prey to it:

Scammers use fraudulent phone calls, emails, or texts telling people they failed to appear for jury duty, and a warrant has been issued for their arrest. Scammers can be very convincing & aggressive. They pretend to be calling from the Stacy M. Butterfield, CPA, Polk County Clerk of Courts office, the Sheriff's Office, Judges’ offices, or other official organizations. They tell the victim that they can clear up the matter by getting a money order, prepaid card, or some other type of payment.

A message from the Clerk of Court:

"We NEVER share jurors’ personal information, and our office does not call or email jurors to ask for personal information or any form of payment, especially via a prepaid debit card.
