Rutgers Wants Your Ticks...
Researchers from Rutgers will test ticks submitted by citizens for pathogens and parasites and create accessible tick distribution and infection maps so New Jersey residents can proactively limit tick bites. Knowing where and when different tick species are prevalent allows New Jerseyans to make informed decisions.

All specimens submitted will be added to a database that tracks tick distributions across New Jersey, including the incidence of over 15 tick-transmitted pathogens and parasites.

Within 48 hours of receiving the specimen, researchers will let submitters know the tick species, diseases associated with it and ways to reduce their risk of contracting a tick-borne disease.

***BARRINGTON GREEN TEAM TREE PROGRAM***

The Barrington Green Team intends to plant 20 shade trees this spring. We would like to plant them in park strips (where available) or will consider planting them on a resident’s front yard (if conditions allow). We are looking for residents who would like to have a tree planted in front of their home, either in the park strip or the front yard. We are doing by a lottery and will put all names into a hat and will draw out the first 20 names. We will then come out to look at the conditions to make sure a tree will work in the requested location. We will also have to call for a mark-out so we can identify where the underground utilities are located. Once we have determined that the location is suitable for a tree, the first 20 who qualify will get a tree planted. We have a list of trees that are considered as good trees for street locations and the resident can choose the type they would like (depending on nursery availability).

Our goal is to plant shade trees, but we will consider planting some ornamental trees, such as dogwoods, if a shade tree is not a good fit for the location. We will also provide gator bags for the trees to make it easier for the resident to keep the tree watered until it has been established. Anyone getting a tree planted in their front yard, will be required to sign a hold harmless agreement with the borough and also agree to be responsible for maintaining the tree.

If you would like a tree in front of your home and want to participate in the tree lottery, email your name and address to the clerk at [email protected]. Please include whether or not you want the tree in the park strip or on your front yard. The deadline for submissions is Friday, April 22, 2022. We will notify every resident who submits their name, of the names that are drawn. We will be doing these tree planting programs annually. If we get more than 20 responses, we will save those not chosen and you will be the first ones on the list for the next round of tree plantings.

We would also like to thank resident Betty May for her generous donation to the tree program. Trees not only provide a home for wildlife, they provide shade, help to drink groundwater and are naturally beautiful. Hopefully there are more residents in Barrington, like Betty, who love and appreciate all the wonderful things that trees provide.
