Nearly two years since the avoidable catastrophe that changed their lives forever, residents in and around East Palestine and their families have been left to live in a toxic “sacrifice zone.”

Like in 2020, the majority of voters in this part of Ohio and Pennsylvania will likely vote for Donald Trump in 2024, though plenty have given up on the whole system. One election cycle later, and these topics barely have any currency in the current race. Yet in spite of this, committed prison abolitionists have been tirelessly organizing to free incarcerated people, improve conditions within the prison system, and close or prevent the opening of new correctional facilities. Rattling the Bars looks back on the past year of discussions with abolitionists on the stakes and political lessons of the current election cycle.

Prison abolition itself won't be on the ballot, but organizers are pushing demands that could change the lives of thousands if adopted by referendum voters or victorious candidates.

In recent weeks, Cuba has grappled with a dual crisis of blackouts and the aftermath of Hurricane Oscar, which killed at least six people on the island. Though the blackouts have become the target of another round of media demonization of Cuba, the current crisis is really the result of the US blockade, which has starved the Cuban people of fuel and other basic necessities for decades. Liz Oliva Fernandez of Belly of the Beast reports from New York City, where protesters took to the streets to denounce the US blockade of Cuba.

After cutting Cuba off from access to fuel, the US government has done more to blame Cubans for their plight than offer assistance during Hurricane Oscar.
