Here's the thing: trying to appeal to everyone might seem like the logical move, but in reality, it's a recipe for missed opportunities.

When your target is too broad, your message can get lost in the noise.

That's why narrowing down and defining your target audience is crucial.

By understanding exactly who your music resonates with, you can tailor your content and engagement strategies to speak directly to them.

Whether it's age groups, specific interests, or geographic locations, having a clear picture of your audience allows you to connect on a deeper level.

Think about it this way: if you're casting a wide net, you're more likely to catch a lot of small fish. But if you focus your efforts on a specific type of fish, you're more likely to reel in the big ones – the fans who truly connect with your music and become your biggest supporters.

So, don't be afraid to narrow your focus.

Defining your target audience not only streamlines your marketing efforts but also helps you foster meaningful connections with the people who matter most to your music career

Here's how to define your target audience in just a few simple steps:

1. Identify Demographics: Start by pinpointing the demographics of your ideal fan. Consider factors like age, gender, location, and interests. Understanding these details will help you tailor your content to better resonate with your audience.

2. Understand Their Interests: Dive deeper into your audience's interests and preferences. What kind of music do they enjoy? What are their hobbies and passions? The more you understand about their interests, the better you can tailor your content to meet their needs.

3. Look at Your Existing Fans: Take a closer look at your current fan base. Who are they? What do they have in common? Analyzing your existing fans can provide valuable insights into who your target audience is and how to reach more people like them.

4. Research Your Competitors: Don't forget to study your competitors! Who are they targeting? What strategies are they using to engage with their audience? Analyzing your competitors can help you identify gaps in the market and opportunities to differentiate yourself.

For myself and most of my clients, we thrive on the freedom to go with the flow.

Structure doesn't always align with our natural inclination.

But then the overwhelm hits

Because one person can only do so much and stay sane

After plenty of trial and error (and a lot of meltdowns), I've found a few strategies that have helped me reclaim some much-needed sanity—and have also helped my clients be more productive & organized:

First, prioritizing your to do list

Trust me, not everything is as urgent as it seems. (this was a hard one for me)

Take a few minutes each morning or at the start of your week to list out your tasks.

And if you're thinking, "But Alix, everything needs to get done, dammit!"—take a deep breath.

I recommend prioritizing the top three tasks that truly move the needle, like responding to that booking email or updating your website with upcoming shows and ticket links

Second, time blocking your schedule

Ever feel like you're spinning your wheels, jumping from one task to the next?

Same here!

That's why I swear by time-blocking.

Set aside dedicated chunks of time for specific activities, whether it's practicing, promoting, or simply brainstorming new ideas.

And remember, you don't have to do it all yourself!

Delegate the tasks that don't necessarily require your direct involvement, like website management or admin tasks from answering emails to booking gigs

Offloading some of the workload will free up valuable time for you to focus on what you do best—making music

What do you struggle with most?

Creating an effective website doesn't have to be complicated.

Here I’ll show you!

But first, save this post for later! 🔒

If you're feeling overwhelmed or unsure what you really need for your website, here are the 5 things I recommend starting with (and then you can build on it from there):

1. Homepage: This is usually the first thing someone coming to your website will see, so make it captivating to immediately grab visitors' attention.

2. Artist bio: Your bio should be compelling and concise, providing visitors with insight into who you are as an artist. Highlight your musical journey, achievements, and influences. Make it personal and engaging to connect with your audience emotionally.

3. Music and Videos: Visual content enhances the user experience and gives visitors a taste of your music style and stage presence (and a good user experience helps with SEO).

4. Tour Dates: A dedicated section for tour dates or an events calendar makes it easy for visitors to find out where they can see you perform live.

5. Contact information: Make it simple for fans, industry professionals, and potential collaborators to get in touch with you. We don’t want you to miss out on opportunities!

If you need help or have questions, feel free to message me—I'm happy to help!

First impressions matter

and your bio - whether that be on your website or social media - needs to stand out

I get it - writing about yourself can be hard

It’s about finding the sweet spot that keeps readers engaged

and not losing them with lengthy paragraphs and text

A balance between choosing the most relevant and recent things to weaving in a cohesive sense of who you are as an artist

Swipe to see my checklist on how I create effective musician bios

Here’s two more checklist items I couldn’t fit into the post for ya!

11. Tone and Voice:

- ☐ Maintain a consistent tone throughout the bio.
- ☐ Ensure that the writing style aligns with the artist's personality and brand.

12. Proofreading:

- ☐ Check for grammatical errors, typos, and clarity.
- ☐ Have someone else proofread the bio for a fresh perspective.

What's the most important thing you want people to know about you from your bio? Share below! 👇

Did you know you don't own your social media profiles? 😲

That's why every musician needs a website.

With a website, you have control and ownership over the content, design, and functionality.

You decide how it looks, what's on it, and how it operates—it's all yours.

On the other hand, social media profiles (like Insta and Facebook) are like rented spaces.

You can decorate, but the platform sets the rules.

And, as we all know, the rules change all the time and at any time.

Suddenly, you're locked out, your content is less visible, and that hard-built community? P**f, gone.

But with a website? It's entirely yours, and you're in charge.

No sudden rule changes or surprises.

Plus, if anything weird happens to your account or the platform itself, people can still find you through your website—a permanent space for your brand.

Bonus: On your website, you can collect emails, building a direct connection with your audience that is yours.

So, while social media is great when it's cooperating, having a website is always there and always yours 🤟

Unless, of course, the internet goes away, but then I think we would all have bigger problems on our hands

Musicians, ever wondered how to make a lasting impression on your Instagram profile?

Let's talk about a little gem that's often overlooked – Pinned Posts 📌

Pinning posts is one of the simplest yet often overlooked features on Instagram

It's like having a little backstage pass to boost your profile game

Here's why and how you could be using them:

1️⃣ Instant Visibility: Pinned posts always appear at the top of your profile, making them the first thing people see when they come to your profile - and let's be honest, you have seconds to catch people’s attention.

2️⃣ Highlight Key Content: Whether it's a new release, an upcoming event, or a favorite stage shot, pinning a post ensures it stays front and center. People don’t often spend time digging around to look for something.

3️⃣ Storytelling at Its Best: Use your pinned post to tell your story or share your latest achievement. It's a snapshot of who you are as an artist at first glance.

Remember to keep it fresh! Change your pinned posts regularly to showcase what's current and relevant 🤟

I was talking to someone the other day who said they don't use hashtags anymore because they don't matter...

🫣

Hashtags can be a game-changer for musicians looking to boost their online presence, but, as with anything, you need a plan and strategy.

Just slapping any and all random hashtags on your post usually won't cut it (you could get lucky butttt we don't want to rely on just that).

Now, you have probably seen people say that 3-5 hashtags are the sweet spot, although Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags...

In the example I shared of my client, their post had 18 hashtags.

I don't know about you, but I follow the data.

That is why it is important to check your insights, track your data, & find what works best for you because what works for one person will not necessarily work for someone else.

Let's say you're a blues musician posting about your latest album release...

Instead of generic hashtags like or , a strategic approach would involve using hashtags like , , and

(I would even get more specific and add in your location like )

These specific and niche hashtags cater directly to your content, making it more likely to reach blues music enthusiasts and potential fans who are actively interested in new album releases within the blues genre.

Where do you stand with hashtags?

Stressed you have run out of stage shots to post?

People crave authenticity and want more than just the stage shots anyway.

They're curious about the person behind the music—the real you.

We all love the relatable side of our favorite musicians and artists.

It makes us feel more connected like we’re all sharing the same human experiences.

And there are people out there that feel that way about you. They want to know what goes on when you’re not on stage.

Like, what's your go-to breakfast? Are you a classic eggs and bacon person, or do you skip breakfast and just drink copious amounts of coffee? ☕

And what about your guilty pleasures? 😏 We all have them.

Do you secretly binge-watch documentaries on serial killers, or maybe you have an embarrassing obsession with a certain celebrity?

It's these personal idiosyncrasies that make you even more relatable and endearing.

Here are 7 content ideas that go beyond the typical show photo:

1. Show off your instruments, gear, or unique tools you use.

2. Share your Spotify playlist full of hidden gems and classics and recommend music to your followers.

3. Take your audience on a nostalgic journey on how you got to where you are today.

4. Provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse into your daily routine.

5. Deepen the connection with your audience by unraveling the inspiration behind a song or specific lyrics.

6. Take your fans behind the scenes of getting ready for a show or tour like your quirky pre-show routine or some of your random must-haves on the tour bus.

7. Give your fans a peek into your world—how you kick back and relax. Whether it's diving into hobbies, hanging out at your favorite spots, or doing activities that keep life balanced.

The more you share, the more your audience feels connected to you and your music 🤘

And that's when I decided that posts about 'steal my strategy' were distracting me more than helping me.

I’m sure you've seen them. They're everywhere – people and posts claiming they have the one and only social media strategy.

When I first started calling myself a social media manager, I was intimidated by the word ‘strategy.’

I thought anyone selling a one-size-fits-all strategy knew something I didn't.

But here’s the thing: a social media strategy is simply a plan or a set of actions designed to achieve specific goals and objectives.

So, there's no way stealing someone else’s strategy could work because they aren’t you and don’t have your same goals.

What those posts often leave out is the trial and error that goes into finding a strategy that works.

But you can learn from those posts the foundations that go into CREATING your own strategy.

If you're not sure where to start, here are 5 must-haves for creating your social media strategy as a musician (and can easily be adapted for any type of creative business):

1. Define Your Brand Vibe - Your brand is the essence of who you are on social media, whether solo or with a band. It ensures a consistent feel in every post and story, especially in your captions. This vibe makes you instantly recognizable, helping to create a seamless connection with your audience both on and off the stage.

2. Write out Your Goals - Setting clear goals for your social media as a musician helps you know where you're headed, track progress, and stay motivated. Whether it's more followers or increased engagement, specific goals guide your actions and keep you on track.

3. Create Actionable Steps for Your Goals - Breaking down your goals into actionable steps is like creating a roadmap for your musical journey on social media. It makes your aspirations tangible, helps you navigate the path, and allows for adjustments along the way.

4. Create Content Pillars - You might be thinking your music is all you need to post, but there is so much more you can share to build a community behind your music. Think behind the scenes, your WHY, throwbacks, etc. Each content pillar (themes or categories that make up your content) serves a purpose – another way outside of your art to connect and create an impact.

5. Identify Your Target Audience - It not only helps you build a connection with your fans but also informs the type of content they'll love and engage with. Knowing your audience ensures that every post hits right and keeps them coming back for more. You can tailor your content to address the specific interests and preferences of your audience, creating a sense of relatability and creating a dedicated fanbase.

And just in case no one has told you yet: consider this your permission to get creative with it!

Picture this: you just rocked the weekend with some killer gigs, and to top it off, your awesome fans sent you videos they took.

Excitement level? Through the freaking roof!

Now, you're thinking, 'Sweet, I've got fresh content for my social media.'

Hold up! Before you hit that upload button, let's chat about three things that can seriously shake up how your reel performs:

1. Video Length: On Instagram, long reels don’t tend to perform well because most of us are operating with the attention span of a gnat these days. Keep it short, between 10-30 seconds. If you have longer videos, save them for TikTok and YouTube!

2. Video Quality: Quality matters, but no need for professional production. Whether it's shot on a fancy camera or an iPhone (I've seen reels made from iPhone videos get over 100k views), aim for non-shaky clips with clear audio.

3. Engagement Factor: Saving the best for last? I get the suspense, but on Instagram, it's all about that instant wow. Grab attention from the get-go. Don't stash your epic solos or killer riffs for the end.

Oh, and here's a little secret: as a social media manager who regularly uses her iPhone 8 to capture footage for bands, I totally get the 'working with what you got' game.

Don't worry about trying to make it perfect 🤘

I ghosted my own social media account for the last half of 2023.

Sharp Social Media was born this time last year, and I've decided to go back to how it all started.

Music and art led me to social media management, and now I'm circling back to my roots.

I get it—the struggle, the hustle, and the need for a space that gets you.

So, what's new around here?

Besides a fresh look thanks to the sweetest human on social media ...

More support geared towards musicians for utilizing social media, glimpses into the creative grind, and a commitment to supporting you every step of the way.

Because, let's be real, when your art meets the right vibe, anything's possible.

If you're into it, feel free to stick around.

I’ve always been about keeping things real, and I’m excited to dive back into what sets my soul on fire—music, art, adventure, and helping fellow creatives find their groove 🤘
