I tend not to post a lot of my pictures on IG. I think I get in my head because the things I like to photograph aren't always super interesting to other people. V***r suspended in the air, slugs clinging to a vine, birds preening... It's always the little mundane details of everyday life that make me want to take pictures.

I'm trying to stop seeing every single social platform as something I need to put serious work and effort into. I think I'm going to try and post more of this random stuff on my feed. Hopefully it'll brighten someone else's day, too.

It’s a shame there really isn’t a market for vulture glamour pics, because I absolutely love taking pictures of our little flock. I love the way the light plays over their shiny black feathers, especially at dawn and golden hour. I love the contrast between slick feathers, soft “hairs”, harsh wrinkles, and scaly talons.

And while it can be tempting to leave these photos unedited or to take a light hand on the editing to let their natural beauty shine, a part of me really enjoys tweaking these photos a lot. I try to avoid edits that are too “horror” or macabre, but instead focusing on the dichotomy of the bird, fulfilling such a vital yet undesirable position in the food chain.

This is Beepus, one of my favorite members of the flock of that frequents our yard. The genders are visually almost identical, so me calling him by male pronouns is just a general "feeling," and he does have rather large wings. Slightly larger wingspan is the only major difference.

Regardless, Beepus will let me stand almost directly next to him, making him remarkably easy to photograph. In this instance, I was about 15 feet away, as I wanted him at ease enough to preen. I prefer to capture in the way I photograph other birds, rather than sensationalizing their gory, gross, or sinister associations.

They are d***y little sweethearts, and without them we would have many more plagues.
