While fire crews work to put out the Borel Fire, they're also preventing the loss of Kern River Communities by backburning areas to prevent the fire from spilling over into them.
Temperatures in Bakersfield have been running below average for the past few days, but another heatwave will start up by Thursday.

A deadly crash in the canyon and a wildfire resulted in Highway 178 being closed on Wednesday. CHP confirmed at least one person has died.

The Borel Fire has burned nearly 50,000 acres as of Sunday evening, and weather conditions continue to favor rapid fire growth.
On Sunday firefighters were attempting to stop the Borel Fire from spreading further into Walker Basin. As of Sunday July 28 the fire has been mapped at 49,274 acres.
Red Cross volunteers have set up two evacuation centers, in Tehachapi and Ridgecrest. An evacuee at the Tehachapi shelter says this is the second time she's been to the shelter and is beyond grateful.

Borel Fire burns though at least 30,000 acres of land and is continuing to grow. Officials are working to contain the fire and ask residents to evacuate if told to do so.

Thursday marked 3 years since the death of KCSO Deputy Phillip Campas. Campus died on July 25th, 2021 during a domestic disturbance call in Wasco.
An evacuation order is in place for zone KRN-403A in the Lake Isabella area, east of Breckenridge Road on HWY 178 due to the Borel Fire. That fire has burned more than 3,000 acres.
