Suspicious Package with Ammo and Gun Parts Found at McLaren Thumb Region

A suspicious package found in a doctor's office behind McLaren Thumb Region Hospital in Colfax Township prompted a significant response from local authorities this morning.

Shortly after 9:00 AM, Huron Central Dispatch sent a deputy to the location after hospital staff discovered a package resembling a bomb, along with other unusual items, including spent ammunition and gun parts.

As a precaution, the office, which was not open for business at the time, and part of McLaren Thumb Region Hospital were evacuated. Patients near the doctor's offices were temporarily moved away from windows.

The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad responded to the scene and, after a thorough examination, determined that the suspicious package was a modification of lithium batteries wired and packaged together, reportedly intended for use on a scooter.

Huron County Sheriff Kelly J. Hanson confirmed the details in a press release issued this afternoon.

The incident was managed with assistance from the Michigan State Police, the Bad Axe Fire Department, hospital security, and operations personnel. Operations at the hospital complex returned to normal just before noon after the all-clear was given.

Harbor Beach Manhunt: Indiana Man Located and in Custody

The Indiana man who reportedly jumped out of a window at Harbor Beach Hospital early Monday morning, sparking a county-wide manhunt, has been located and is now in custody.

Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson confirmed that the man was found by a resident in their home on 2nd Street, near the hospital.

The man was initially encountered by authorities shortly after midnight on August 26th in Sherman Township, where he was reportedly jumping in front of cars and standing in the roadway, experiencing hallucinations.

He is currently being checked over for a leg injury sustained when he jumped out of the hospital window around 5:55 AM on Monday morning, and a mental health evaluation will continue.

Charges may be sought by the Huron County Prosecutor's Office in relation to the illegal entry into the residence.

The search effort involved multiple agencies. The Harbor Beach Fire Department provided manpower and deployed a drone, while the Harbor Beach Police Department and the Tuscola County Sheriff's Office, which sent a K-9 unit and deputy, also assisted the Huron County Sheriff's Department in the search.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health issues, help is available. Please call or text 988, the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, for support.

City Attorney: Bad Axe Council Must Revoke Ma*****na Ballot Decision

In a recent turn of events, the Bad Axe City Council has been advised to rescind its decision to put the ma*****na ordinance on the November ballot.

Rebecca Bachman, City Manager of Bad Axe, confirmed, "Per our city attorney, the council cannot put this on the ballot. Therefore, they need to rescind the motion and then have an actual vote on the ordinance."

Attorney Kyle T. O'Mara explained that while the Council aims for transparency, they lack the authority to put the ordinance on the ballot under the City Charter. The Charter permits the public to initiate or repeal ordinances through a petition process, but it does not allow the Council to place a proposed ordinance on the ballot without receiving such a petition first.

The City Council will address this issue and vote directly on the ma*****na ordinance this Monday, July 1st, at City Hall in downtown Bad Axe at 6:30 p.m.
