AN OPEN LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY AND BEYOND:
Greetings Downtown Followers,
We need to talk about this past weekend. There was a record breaking 10.8 Billion dollars in Black Friday weekend sales. But where? Our downtown district (and beyond) experienced the worst Black Friday & Small Business Saturday weekend potentially ever. I decided to come on here and talk about it instead of slapping on a smile and pretending it would all work out because frankly at this point it's not going work out if our communities don't pivot their spending habits. We need you to put down the convenience of an app and get into these businesses and shop. Your beloved Main Street community just does not survive on "Shop Small" posts on the internet. It needs your dollars. I am speaking from my own experience and with my own voice today but my experiences are not isolated. I am in the thick of the business community and am responsible for organizing as a group, giving support, guidance, resources, and trouble shooting. I am hearing the same things from everyone. Sales are down and not by a small margin. Foot traffic has been down this entire year and not by a small margin. None of these businesses are going to survive without actionable support. We don't want pity or sympathy, we need action. We need the efforts of a community 365 days a year to keep this beautiful downtown business community alive. And not just for our own benefit but for you and your children. If the buildings are empty who is going to donate to your charity auction? Who will host these fun events you love to attend? Who is going to sponsor your kids sports team? Who's going to have that last minute item you can no longer order on Amazon and Walmart is sold out of? Where are you going to enjoy a nice meal at lunch time?
I implore you to make careful considerations about where you shop for the remainder of the holiday season and beyond. I don't want to see anymore of our precious retailers, service providers, and eateries go under over the next year. Give us that tiny bit of effort and go show some real love by visiting Downtown Johnstown and spending your money in it's businesses.
