How and Why to Grow Cucumbers in a Herringbone Pattern for a Bigger Harvest🥒

1️⃣ Why Use the Herringbone Pattern?
This layout optimizes space, airflow, and light exposure, reducing diseases and boosting growth. It also makes harvesting easier as the plants spread out uniformly.

2️⃣ How to Set Up a Herringbone Pattern:
Prepare the Bed: Create a long central trench in your garden bed, enriched with compost and well-draining soil.
Planting Layout: Position cucumber seeds or seedlings diagonally along both sides of the trench, forming a "V" shape. Space plants about 12-18 inches apart.
Add Support: Install trellises or stakes at angles to encourage vines to climb outward and upward, following the pattern.

3️⃣ Care Tips for Maximum Yield:
Water regularly to keep soil moist but not soggy.
Fertilize with a balanced mix every 2-3 weeks.
Prune excess foliage to maintain airflow and focus energy on fruit production.

Baking soda neutralizes the ph in the soil and nothing will grow there. use baking soda around all of the edges of flower beds to keep the grass and weeds from growing into beds. Just sprinkle it onto the soil so that it covers it lightly. Do this twice a year - spring and fall.

Don't wait until your tomatoes turn red! THIS is when you should be picking your tomatoes. It's called the "breaker" stage and the tomato already has everything it needs to ripen on its own. Pick away, store it some place warm and dry and your plant will have more energy to dedicate to growing more tomatoes!

This year to save money on potting soil in my large planters, I will be using pine cones as a pot filler filling it 1/3 of the pot. Once they breakdown they will supply an abundance of nutrients. To help speed that up, I'll be crushing them some before I add the soil. I have many pine trees in my woodland garden so I have an abundance of pine cones.

Enrich Your Garden Naturally: The Power of Trench Composting

Benefits of Trench Composting:
Enriches Soil: Buried waste decomposes, adding nutrients and improving moisture retention.
Odor-Free: Keeps decomposition out of sight and smell.
Pest-Resistant: Prevents pests like rodents by burying food scraps.
Time-Saving: No turning or aerating needed.
Eco-Friendly: Reduces waste while naturally enriching soil.
Steps to Start Trench Composting:
1. Choose a Spot: Select a garden area to enrich—vegetable beds, flower gardens, or unused patches.
2. Dig a Trench: Dig a trench 12-18 inches deep to fully bury your waste.
3. Add Waste: Layer kitchen scraps, garden clippings, and compostable materials. Avoid meat, dairy, and oily foods.
4. Cover with Soil: Fill the trench with soil and pat it down gently.
5. Let It Decompose: Leave it for a few months for worms and microbes to break it down naturally.
Best Practices:
Rotate Trenches: Spread nutrients evenly by rotating trench locations.
Plan Ahead: Wait 2-3 months before planting in the same area.
Balance Materials: Mix green (kitchen scraps) and brown (leaves, cardboard) for optimal decomposition.
Mark Trenches: Use stakes or markers to track buried compost.
Variations:
Posthole Composting: Use smaller holes instead of long trenches.
Keyhole Gardening: Combine trench composting with raised beds by adding a central composting trench.
Long-Term Benefits:
Trench composting enriches soil, supports plant growth, reduces waste, and promotes sustainability. Try it and turn your scraps into a thriving, eco-friendly garden.
