====================
Azathu's Echoes from Lost Carcosa is a dark journey into the depths of cosmic horror, blending the raw aggression of death metal with the bleak atmosphere of black metal. The duo, composed of Tyrant on drums and vocals and Antemìa Kavillari on guitars, channels the sinister essence of their previous bands—Black Vice, Ninhursag, Ravnblod, Smother, Veskraunghulthyr, and Will of the Whore—into a haunting and cohesive sonic experience.
Lyrically, the album draws heavily from Robert W. Chambers' The King in Yellow, particularly in tracks like "Cassilda’s Song," which vividly evokes the eerie and desolate landscape of Carcosa. The music amplifies this atmosphere with relentless blast beats, dissonant guitar riffs, and haunting vocal delivery. Tracks like "Ataraxia" and "Murmured Waltz of Moans" are standout examples of the band's ability to weave intricate stories of despair and madness, while instrumental pieces like "Glossolaliac Murmur" and "Call of Azathoth" provide chilling interludes that allow the listener to sink deeper into the album's nightmarish world.
"Unmask Vile Illusion" and "Aureate King Presence" continue to explore themes of insanity and cosmic dread, with powerful lyrics that challenge the listener to confront their darkest fears. The closing track, "Call of Azathoth," leaves the listener in a state of eerie calm, a fitting end to an album that is as unsettling as it is captivating.
Echoes from Lost Carcosa is a must-listen for fans of extreme metal who appreciate a well-crafted blend of brutality and atmosphere. Azathu has delivered an album that is as much a work of art as it is a harrowing descent into the unknown.
