🌊Welcome to Season 5 of The Host Dispatch!! 🌊

We can’t think of a better way to kick off the new season than this conversation with Stephanie Niu—the most recent winner of the Host Publications Chapbook Prize! 🐚

Stephanie’s chapbook SURVIVED BY is a mesmerizing collection of poems, full of grief and wonder in equal measure. Niu’s work explores ecopoetics as we’ve never encountered before, maps and visual poems create a kind of “atlas of disappearance” centered around the species of Christmas Island, an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean, and the place of origin of many poems in this collection.

🐚 We talked about the shell wall at the American Museum of Natural History, the connections between poetic and scientific worldviews, what poetry as “atlas” might mean, and much, much more!

This conversation was dreamy, scholarly and enlightening, and through it we’ve come to love Stephanie and her chapbook in a whole new way 🥹💙

We hope you enjoy S. 5 Ep. 1: “In Conversation with Stephanie Niu” available now, wherever you listen 🎧

🩵 Catalogue Spotlight: a staff favorite & a Host Publications bestseller, OVER AUTUMN ROOFTOPS by Hai Zi, translated from Chinese by Dan Murphy 🩵

Hai Zi wrote his best poems from 1984 to 1989, a time of fertile artistic innovation for literature and the arts in China. But Hai Zi’s poetry easily transcends the trends of the literary world during his lifetime. In his work we find the poverty, agricultural scenes, and hunger of his peasant upbringing.

His poems touch down on the grasslands, wheat fields and landscapes of western China, Tibet, and Inner Mongolia, where he traveled. At times he draws on China’s literary and cultural history. He writes to the night, the snow, mountains, the earth, and the sea. Yet he is not simply a cultural poet or a nature poet.

And although his work is distinctly Chinese, his poetry does not belong exclusively to any particular time or place - it transcends all of this.
